Shrunken dress to pencil skirt

Before

I had previously dyed this dress, which caused it to shrink into a most-unflattering, constantly-riding-up minidress.

After

Now it's a better-fitting pencil skirt!

I'm sure the Refashion Co-op has seen plenty of dress-to-skirt conversions—the most interesting thing about this one was the challenge of making just one small part of it wider.

Because the waist of the dress ended up as the hip area of the skirt, it was way too tight around the hips. I ended up making an oval-shaped patch on just one side (shown below in an early try-on) and repeated it on both the liner and the outer layer.

In the end, (though you can see it if you're looking for it) it was not too noticeable, so I consider this a decent solution for expanding a garment if you don't have much fabric to work with!

For all the details about the process, read the post on my blog, The Unfashionista!

Gorgeous! Hey, if the fix works and isn't too unnoticeable then I call it a win. Great save!

A perhaps other idea in cases like yours:
Skirt made sort of 'tiered' (by having simply a 'permitted orderly visible seam' in between?) by using the dress material for the new skirt sidewards? This would then ask to make the scalloped edge just another additional 'tier' at the bottom?

admires you for opting for such a - mho -'hard way' of fix.
Yet it might have made sense due to one-way stretchiness or the like which you wanted to keep?
