Second chance for cap sleeve (and blouse)

Does keeping loads of beautiful buttons, ribbons and other garment details 'because they might come in handy someday' sound familiar? And do you recognize the excitement of finding the perfect new purpose? (Yes, I knew it would be useful again!) Well, this post is about just that. It's more about reusing that about refashioning. But while I was at it, I also made a few alterations for a better fit.

I fell in love with this second-hand blouse a few years ago. Those cute little swallows! And the double collar! I was instantly sold, and so was the blouse. But the armholes were a little too big, and I love a good sleeve on a blouse, it just kept lying on a pile...

Enjoy!

You're very welcome to check out more details on my blog on vermaakster.blogspot.com. You'll find a detailed explanation there in Dutch and English. I'm still working on my Italian:).

Denim Days-Add Some Adidas

Hello Refashion Co-op. I refashioned denim all month and this is my last denim post. For now anyway. These jeans had gotten too tight and I was inspired by @blueprintdiy to use the stripes from some Adidas sweat pants to fix them. Check her out on Instagram or Youtube. You will love her.

Before and after.
I cut the side seams open.

I cut the striped pieces out of the sweat pants.

I stitched them in and it was easy as pie. I never understood that expression because making pie is a lot of work.

These were so comfortable and fun. I love them. Thanks for reading along, for more pictures and details go to I Can Work With That.

Reducing the punishment pile

Do you have those refashion items that don't work but you can't quite let go?  This is one of those: I like the colors, but it was all wrong when I put it on (length / fit / style).

It's been in my maybe one day pile for a long time.

Then one day when I was fossicking in my maybe pile that top and this striped one fell together.  They shouldn't work because one is raspberry and the other grape and grey but they look the same colour when they are together by some weird alchemy.

Meant to be?  Maybe, and maybe not.  The neckline on this one is alarmingly stretched when wearing so there was one way for them to go together.

I messed about with options and then cut them apart for sewing back together better.

Which is when the 'fun' started. I cut the raspberry one / top part to my block pattern for knits exactly.  But when I tried it on it was way too big.  Did I stretch it all out of shape trying it on? Nope, checked against the pattern and it was fine.  I safety pinned it on me to where it needed to go and that was about 8cm (3in?) each side.  Unbelievable.  I split the difference and took it in 4cm each side and that seem right next time I tried it on.

Then this - little did I know that the stripes were mismatched by 5 between one side and the other.  Disguised on the original version but it would have been obvious against the block colour.  Did I give up (when I should have)? NOooooo, I cut one side open, pinned every second stripe and sewed the striped section together - with wrong sides together. <Sigh>.  Unpicked and sewed them together again.  Then I had to finagle that sharp point at the bottom side seam, still matching the stripes.  So. Much. Time. Then I stitched the top and bottom together perfectly aligned.  Then I set in the sleeves...

...and tried it on and hated it.  I dunno, maybe being tortured during the sewing process means I was never going to like it.  I can't put my finger on it.  I added the neck band and I'm going to donate it and hope it makes someone else happy.  It's looks fine on Gabby there.

Lessons learned: 1. I don't have to save everything.  2. When it stops being fun, stop and do the next thing.

I hope your up-cycling is going well, now and in future.  May it always be fun.

Denim Days-Dying Dots

Hello Refashion Co-op. I found this purple denim jacket at a clothes swap. It was perfect for a refashion in May because I am working with denim all month. The purple polka dots caught my eye but after I took it home and washed it... the purple just seemed too purple???

Before and after.

Is it the lavender shade of purple? Is it the dots? Something isn't working here.

Red wine seemed like a better color choice. I used this dye to dye the jacket. I thought the wine color would cover the lavender well.

The color turned out great. I decided to cut the jacket into a cropped length and cut the sleeves shorter too. I like the look of fraying denim so this was a fun jacket for me.

I really liked how is lightweight jacket turned out.

I dyed these old khaki pants with the jacket and they turned out well too. Thanks for reading along!

Denim Days-White Vest to Jacket

Hello Refashion Co-op. I decided to put this white vest and white lace shirt together.

Before and after.

I cut the sides of the vest open so I could sew in some fabric from the lace shirt.

I used fabric from the sides of this lace shirt to fill in the sides of my vest.

I decided to add the sleeves and make this a jacket.

I decided to add some lace trim to the collar too. You can see more pictures and details at I Can Work With That.

Kentucky Derby Hat

Next weekend in the Kentucky Derby! Which means it's time to make a new hat! In spirit of making yet another hat I wanted to share a hat I refashioned a few years ago from a girls $1 store sun hat!

DSCN1815

I started with this plain white little girls sun hat.

DSCN1817

Purple was the color I wanted to go with this year. I tried Tulip Color Shot fabric spray. Let me tell you, it worked like a charm!

Next I collected my supplies: 1 1/2inch ribbon, flowers, feathers and beads to make a hat pin!

I love how this upturned side with the hat pin turned out!
