A Beach Coverup

I started with this lovely yard sale shirt/jacket thing:
Shoulder pads big enough for a linebacker? Check!
After seam ripping the sleeves and changing them from a taper to a straight sleeve (same diameter at the shoulder and new hem) and creating a button closure/sash with the cutoff cuffs, I now have a beach coverup, or a "kimono"esque robe/top that I can wear like a cardigan or jacket. The fabric is light and airy (silk) which will make this great for spring and summer!
Because of the high side and back slits, when I wear it as a top I'll wear some sort of cami underneath...or I could close them up a bit.

I like that this is now a versatile piece that can transition from my everyday wardrobe to a beach/pool friendly piece. What do you all think? I'd love to hear from you! Check out the full tutorial here.

Peace,
Andrea

  1. I love it! Beautiful and stylish (and one would have never thought that the original shirt had it in it).
I have a shirt, that I have thought of to make into a kimono-sort-of-thing, and this the perfect inspiration.

  3. Very pretty. And what an improvement to the sleeves. Love how the buttons are still on the belt.

  4. Thanks all! I love that this was super low waste (two very tiny scraps cut off), and I'm finding all kinds of great uses for cuffs ;)

  8. That's so CHIC! Wear it with big shades, a massive sun hat, and sky-scraper heels, whilst emerging from a sports car! Total movie moment!! :D
