Alright, refashionistas...

Time to earn your stripes. I posted about this fabric on my blog, but I think this is a great forum to ask an expert opinion.

What in the world do I do with this fabric?

The scale is pretty large, and it's a loose weave. Was probably at some point a tablecloth? Or wall hanging? The color is pretty accurate on my monitor-- navy with some bright fuschia, off-white. Odd spider snowflakes and duck horses. See for yourself.

My hope is to make a cool blazer? What do you think? I refuse to say no to free fabric (except that one time), so I'm hoping for some creative genius to step in and save me please!

actually when i saw that fabric I thought it would make a super cute skirt. maybe a circle like skirt? but that was my first inital thought! i don't know how much fabric you have!

I thought skirt too! A little faux wrap tulip skirt with some angled pleats. (I think Anthropologie has such a thing right now)
Pleats would help disguise the odd horse-ducks and it would just read as cool ethnic-y fabric!

I'm thinking like this:

(wish blogger would let me just copy the picture!)

It looks a bit too loosely woven to be turned into a skirt, but appearances can be deceiving... I first thought "travel bag" (probably because that's the last thing I made), and I wouldn't go the blazer route because all the details on a blazer together with the patterned fabric will probably look too busy, but I think a simple bolero-ish cropped jacket would look fabulous made from this fabric!

Maybe you can use it together with another fabric that is just one color. In that case can this "busy" fabric work like a contrast.

Ha, how bizarre! I think a blazer would be fab. It'd really stand out if the rest of the outfit was minimal.

Definitely a little jacket, or what about a bag? If you lined it with something a bit more hard-wearing it'd probably stand up to the use...

Maybe a little shrug would be nice?

My first thought was a dirndle skirt because the bands within the fabric's pattern seem to lend themselves to circling the body. I think a cropped jacket like a simple bolero would look fabulous (perhaps you could do both!!)with a contrast lining. But would personally steer away from anything more complex than that. Not only would excessive darting and seaming distort the pattern, I think the pattern is so lovely it "deserves the stage to itself" so to speak! Gertie has a great dirndle skirt tutorial.
Those are my gut instincts.

Hey...I like the horse-ducks! I like the idea of making it into either a simple maxi skirt or a strapless maxi dress. If the fabric is too thin, you could wear a slip under it, so no one gets a peep show. :) -Jillian, EOD

I second (third?) the cropped jacket/bolero idea. It seems awfully busy to do something too large with, but then that's probably just my own "quiet" taste in fabric.

Okay so definitely not anything big, and no darts (I definitely want to preserve the odd animal/shamans floating around on this).

I'll admit my main fear with this is looking like one of those frumps that clearly wishes she were an American Indian. If you live in the U.S. you have probably seen this look,it normally involves a T-shirt with wolves on it (not that there's anything wrong with those!)

I like the idea of a fresher/newer style to counter the traditional fabric-- the tulip skirt, something strapless, and cropped jacket are all GREAT ideas! Thank you!

I knew this was the place to ask.

How about something really bold? This fabric turned into a pair of walking shorts would look fabulous with a simple cotton tee and a chunky necklace!
