I've been totally swamped with work and family stuff for awhile, but just *perhaps* time is opening up today! I've got a lot on my plate for this morning, but maybe I will be able to squeeze in some sewing time this afternoon.
Picked up this tiny skirt yesterday, as I am in love with this fabric! It's a nice 100% cotton, almost voile with a Liberty of London feel. The waistband is soooo small it won't even fit my dress form, nevermind me!
What to do with it? There are currently inseam pockets and a side zipper, that is broken. Lots of inverted pleats and perhaps 4 yards of width at the hem! A simple flowy tank top would be doable, but perhaps not take advantage of the amount of fabric.
I have a large ribcage and a smallish waist, so no empire styles for me. Hating my arms and knees right now...:) so no short little dresses. What Would You Do??
Looking forward to seeing more posts from our contributors, and welcoming new ones today, as I am Editor On Duty for now! (Such fun to fiddle!) Did you see the new sign up form on the right of our blog? Send your friends!
Happy sewing!

Mhm... tough question. Given the limitations you mentioned, I guess the safest thing would be to unpick it at the waistband, open up the pleats, and make a wider, elastic waistband with the uppermost part of the fabric. That would also take care of the broken zipper and you could keep the pockets! It might turn out to be exactly that midi length that is supposed to be all the rage now :) Or if you have jersey fabric or a tee in orange or red, you could make a two-part dress with a non-empire waist. It's a very beautiful fabric, I hope you get to make something you like!
Had much the same thought as poet above. Unpick that tiny waist, and 'free up the fabric' you may be surprised, once washed and ironed, just how MUCH fabric there is, and that may inspire you more, as I'm sure you are just seeing the restriction of the waistband.
goodluck and make sure you keep us updated.
I'd make a tank top and a cute bag.
Depends on what you think of the whole midi/maxi skirt trend? If you like that look, I'd do what the others said and unpick teh waistband (or maybe just cut the thing off, I mean how much fabric could possibly be in there) and re-pleat for a new waistband.
Have you thought about a flowy-armed peasant top? Cute fabric and plenty of yardage, seems to me! You could even do a drawstring or elastic waist where it flatters you most!
p.s. Am working on 'kokopelli in AZ' problem right after I finish 'beads in New Orleans'.
Thanks for all of your thoughts!!! I'm almost done designing a client's bathroom, then on to my seam ripper!
I was thinking about some kind of blouse, maybe with a peplum and some of my recycled sweater roses in lieu of a butt bow. I'll know more after this waistband is off. It may just be a skirt for awhile! :)
remove the waste band and zipper. install a nice elastic wasteband. 1/2 up fom botom 1 side spilt the seam. cut hemline on an angle. tke peice you cut and attach onother side in a ruffle fahiosn add long cotton lace - teh flat kind with eyelet edge on the angles like a handkerchief bottom show the white lace on the open side seam at that opening attach a solid colored fabric flower rock n roll
I think there's definitely a nice handbag and an elastic-waisted skirt (tea length?) in there.
I kind of like the idea of a flowy peasant blouse-- if you did a simple raglan sleeve/drawstring or elastic neckline, it could be pretty easy to figure out even without a pattern. (I'd use a belt or sash or something to cinch it in at the waist, to keep it from looking totally shapeless. Especially for a smallish waist!)
I think I would make it into a top too. A nice little summer top.
I'm loving the fabric too.
