Let me Introduce Myself... LaLaLauren!

Greetings Refashioners! Hi! I am Lauren (otherwise known as LaLaLauren) and I am so excited about the Refashion Co-op blog and excited I can contribute! I love to see everyone's creativity in the refashion world!

So a little about me... I live in Mobile, Alabama. I have always been a crafter since I was little. My mother always loved making crafts and sewed a costumes for us. When we got older, she didn't sew much but focused more on crafts. In undergrad college, I did lots of crafts in my sorority and scrap booked. But when I started graduate school, my creativity kind of tanked so I could study science. I did not get into sewing until I started to bellydance. Costumes were expensive and even though you would spend good money on a costume, the instant you put it on and began to dance things began to fall apart. So I learned how to sew to fix and make bellydance costumes. That's when I first began refashioning. I searched thrift stores for material for skirts and appliques for bra/belt sets. And that's how it began...

I just recently began refashioning clothing not for bellydance costumes but for actual wear. I am a post-doctoral fellow in ovarian cancer research and I am trying to find more work appropriate apparel but not break the bank since I need to pay off grad school! In 2011 I made the resolution to not buy new clothes but only thrift, refashion, and sew my own clothing (did I mention I'm a self taught sewer, I really don't know what I am doing)! I thought it would be really hard but so far its March and I really enjoy it. Let's see come summer how I feel! :)

Ok enough about how I started let's get to the goods! I have my own blog at http://laurenphd.blogspot.com where you can find everything from crafts, refashions, sewing, etc. Its an adventure so that's why I call my blog "Adventures of Lauren". My tag will be LaLaLauren on this blog. Yay!

Here's one of my first refashions... I found this beautiful teal cardigan at the thrift store but it needed some work...

Kind of big, no shape, blah! I used some teal fabric I had in my stash (did I mention I am a bit of a fabric hoarder and bought 60 boxes of fabric off a crafter-it fills an entire closet of mine) that matched perfectly. I took it in and added ruffles to the front of it to now turn it into...

I love wearing this cardigan to work! Yay for more work clothes!

Thanks everyone for reading and letting me be one of the contributors! I love seeing everyone's creativity! Stay tuned for more! Have a happy Mardi Gras!

XOXOXO,
LaLaLauren

Thank you! Yes I have a stash of fabric that I will be using for many projects to come! If I can get rid of half of it by the end of the year I'd be impressed and my boyfriend happy!

That's beautiful! What type of stitch did you use to keep the seams from fraying apart?
