On Sunday our local cinema was showing 'The Little Mermaid' and I was planning on taking the kids to it and on Saturday afternoon looking around a thrift store I found a pillowcase of the little mermaid. This had to be fate (although fate could have given me a bit more time to prepare) so I set about making a couple of dresses. The pattern was widthways which gave me enough width for 2 dresses (I only had to add additional fabric for one half of one dress's back), but not enough length. I also did not want to lose any of Ariel's face and hair to the neckline and armhole. My Yoked Top pattern (see previous posts of mine on this blog) would be perfect as this allowed more length and more space to highlight Ariel. The only pattern adjustment I had to make was to lengthened the sides out into a dress. For my older daughter it would still be a tad short so I hemmed the dress with a band.
All up with the pillow costing me $1 and the block fabric another $1, it meant the dresses were $1 each and they had a great time at the movies as well (unfortunately that cost significantly more than $2).
On the Tuesday after, I couldn't help but make another one as I had another pillowcase which had a widthways print. This time I used a stripey knit off-cut that I had, so I didn't have to have an opening like in the Ariel dresses. This was such a quick sew as I had made the front and back pattern exactly the same so it was quick to cut and there were only 6 seams and 4 edges to sew. It was also quite quick to get the photos as well, I think my daughter Mae-Mae is getting used to modelling my refashions, as this photoshoot took about 3 minutes this morning before work. I took the camera out and she just starting striking all these poses, I think her poses are so cute!
