Kid Shorts Variations: Reusing a T-Shirt Hem and Making Pants
Last time I wrote was about the shorts I made for my little boy out of duvet cover scraps using the MADE pattern. Now I'll show you what I made by modifying the pattern.
I used this t-shirt I thrifted for €1 to make a super comfy jersey pair of shorts.
The awesome part (besides the comfy, €1 and thrifted parts, not to mention the lovely color) is that I was able to modify the bottom of the pattern...
...to reuse the t-shirt hem and not have to hem the shorts! I just love time-saving tricks like this!
Then I used scraps from a crib sheet and a button-down shirt I found laid out on top of a pile of trash on the sidewalk (yes, I gave it a good sanitizing wash, don't worry!) to make some long-legged pants/trousers.
I found that for this particular pattern, simply extending the legs downwards worked for wide-legged pants.
I kept one pair like this, but the other pair I ended up taking in the inner legs so that they'd be easier for my little guy to run in and so I could add those button-up straps so you can roll up the pant legs for 3/4 length pants. (Does anyone know what those straps are called?)
I love the versatility of these pants for these in-between seasons! Full tutorials available on my blog, Cucicucicoo! (T-shirt shorts here and pants from a short pattern here.)

This is a very good idea.
I don't know the proper name for the straps other than tabs?

Fabulous trousers and shorts. I would say "tabs" too!

These are great and I need to draft a pattern for my son...he loves elastic waisted pants cause they are "cozy" and doesn't ever want to wear his jeans (though, as soon as his two pair of elastic waisted pants are dirty, he doesn't have a choice ;)!). Love the pants with the tabs, especially, and will have to try these out!
"tabs": excellent! Thanks!
@Andrea, my son wears only elastic waisted pants/shorts because a) they're easier for me, b) they're the only thing he can handle pulling back up on his own, c) his kindergarten requires all children wear only elastic waists because they can't be buttoning up every kid! Oh, and they're also a whole lot easier to sew than button- or zip-ups! :)
I love all three, but the adjustable ones are my favorite!

They're my favorites, too, because they're so versatile! But I think that next time I'll add two tabs to keep them more even. Though I wonder if having them on the inner leg will be annoying...
I love how you used existing clothing to make something fresh and new.
Thanks, Mezzy!
