MFAM Week 3: It's All Greek to Me

MFAM header copy

It's week three of the My Favorite Art Museum series, and we're continuing on with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's collection of ancient Greek and Roman art.

Among my favorite pieces in the Nelson's Greek and Roman collection are a pair of dainty gold floral earrings and a sarcophagus depicting the stylishly dresses muses. These two pieces inspired this week's project.

As some of you may remember, my sister got married earlier this year, and part of my job as maid of honor was to find a dress in just the right light spring/minty green. To my surprise, I found a lovely vintage Romanesque maxi dress in the exact color I was looking for. Unfortunately, I didn't find it until a month after the wedding. I bought it anyway.

Being your sister's maid of honor... priceless

To recreate the earrings, I dug into my stash of jewelry making supplies and raided my jewelry box.

jewelry 1Bits and pieces.

After picking out a ill-fitting necklace and a variety of odds and ends, I got to work taking some things apart and putting other things together.

The dress was in good shape.  All I had to do was dab a little clear nail polish on a couple runs in the polyester. (No photos of that. Sorry.) I'm not sure if the nail polish trick will work, but Google said it was a good idea, so I gave it a shot.

To complete my ancient Greek/Roman look I paired my new Franken-earrings and the mint maxi dress with some wedge sandals. The dress was still way too long, but I didn't care.

Now I'm wishing summer could last just a little bit longer. (Okay, maybe not really.)

For a complete rundown on this refashion, the previous two weeks of the MFAM series, and a variety of other refashioning projects, check out my blog.

Don’t forget to tune in next week for the next MFAM installment, and remember, please don’t touch the art.
