Black Velvet

Feels like I've been out of the refashioning game for awhile - probably hemmed this one a little too short but it was still a fun transformation! I've never sewn on velvet before, so it was interested - not as difficult as I had originally expected..

Saving toddler pants

That's one of the easiest things to do, really! When your kids outgrow their pants you don't have to say goodbye to them. 

A couple of weeks ago, my cousin was going through her daughter's clothes (who's 8 months older than mine and so, mine gets all her clothes when they don't fit her anymore)... and she realised she had way too many pair of pants.. and so did mine too. 

What to do? Simple, right? Cute a pair of them into shorts, hem and that's it. I used a double needle stitch on the hem to keep it looking cute, and because the fabric had a bit of elastic on both.

A Sweater Tattoo

This is a perfectly lovely sweater, and a great contrast color for when I interpret.

With a little surprise in the back!

This is a “reverse applique” technique on this little heart.  I pinned a square of pretty fabric to the inside of the sweater, making sure it was larger than the heart.
I used permanent marker to draw the heart shape on the shoulder.  No turning back now!
I sewed a straight stitch on the line, then carefully cut out the center of the heart.  One more time around the shape with a zigzag stitch just to be sure it’s not going  anywhere.

This isn't so much of a "refashion", but more of a quick little change that makes me happy!

Fall Floral: a heavy knit hem

Hello again everyone! I wanted something warm and fun to wear to Thanksgiving this year. I found this floral, knit, outdated dress at a local thrift store that I love to go to, and I think I paid about $0.75 for it.

I could see that it had potential, but it was too long. Here is a before picture, along with my cat, Darwin, being indecent. I apologize.

Hemming heavy knit fabric turned out to be soooo much more difficult than I thought! I spent a few hours on a job that should have taken me about 45 min, tops. I finally got it right, though, and here is the final product!

Shortening a skirt and gaining a headband!

I had this really long skirt that used to drag along the ground.  Not much fun in the wet.

So I decided to shorten it a little.  As it had a bold pattern, I decided to shorten it from the top (an old curtain trick that I picked up along the way!)

I cut the waistband off, took out the zip, sewed it back up and added some elastication (I don't show my waistbands anyway!)

And lo and behold I not only had a new skirt - it also came with its own matching headband!
