A jersey dress with a tube bodice. It was insanely tight above the bust, and too long.
Imagine the dress like this, only 20 cm/8" longer. (The picture is of the finished dress, but is an attempt to show the original dress by tucking the modifications in).
I removed the above-bust-elastic and added a pair of bra straps (from a thrifted bra) to the dress, so it would stay up.
(The strange spot in the middle is just a clothes pin mark).
I then cut the lower 20 cm of the dress and made an infinity dress by sewing the strip of fabric to the center back of the dress.

A lot more useful now, a real summer favourite....wait, its autumn now, pokkers også.

Using old bra straps is a clever idea. The dress looks so wearable now.
