I found a beautiful ikat scarf at Goodwill and mixed it with a button-down shirt to make a tunic using Simplicity 1461. Here's a look at the before:
Everything was sewing up beautifully until I decided to hack the back and add a matching scarf panel. I guess I got overconfident with my pattern drafting and didn't do a reality check because the princess seams don't line up at the shoulders.
Argh!!! It's not like I'm a smidge off - I'm 1" off on both sides. I don't have enough fabric for a do-over. That's the bummer with refashioning. You can't run out to the store and get more fabric.
At least the front and the sleeves are cute.

No one would ever notice the detail about the shoulders. I always love to see your refashions. They are very inspiring.
Thanks Maria!
This looks so good despite imperfections which noone else will notice. Especially like the fringe on the arms.
I don't see the problem! I love the fringe sleeves.
Don't worry, the ikat makes the eye see differently anyway, so will miss the shoulder issues. and besides, I don't really think many people spend time looking at shoulders! ;-) Besides, the fringe will be what catches the eye.
I think it is brilliant. It suits you very well.
Eh...why not let people think it was a deliberate design decision so as to use as much of the scarf pattern on the back as possible? ;-)
What a fabulous shirt! It looks great, I like the pieces that don't line up. It looks very graphic and modern.

Looks great and if you had not mentioned it I would not have noticed!
Thanks. The fringed sleeve is my favorite part of the shirt.
Thanks Mel.
