Kilt to Corset

This is a refashion I did earlier this year but as it's the festive season it will be worn again so thought I'd post it here.

I use old kilts that are ripped or have holes in them.  In other words unwearable as kilts.  I take them to bits and boil wash them until I have some lovely felted wool fabric.  More details on how to felt a kilt here and see how much fabric is in a kilt!!

I use the fabric to make cushions etc but this kilt produced a lovely fabric and I wanted to make something special with it.  Interestingly the grey colour was actually green before felting!  More details here

It is a fully lined Victorian traditional corset.  It took 20 hours to complete (with guidance from the tutor) I have 2 more cut out and ready to stitch.  One of them is refashioned from my wedding dress.  I've just returned to teaching full time so refashioning has taken a bit of a back seat atm so can only manage wee projects

Red blouse

This blouse is at least 10 years old.  It wasn't quite as white as it should have been so was ripe for refashioning.

A quick spin in the washing machine with a packet of dye turned it into a lovely red colour.

Loved the colour but the style was a little dated so I shortened the sleeves and cut off the floppy collar.

And now I love it! Perfect with jeans :-)

The eyes have it

Not much sewing and refashioning is happening atm as I've just moved house although I've recycled some curtains but here's one I did in the summer.

 

I just loved the motif on my teenage son's No Fear t shirt that he'd worn out.  I'd been saving some kids tees that had fab motifs on them but not done anything with them yet.

This was a white tee that was still wearable so it got chucked in the washing machine with a few other white items (like the shirt in my profile pic) with a packet of Tulip Red dye.

I zig zag stitched around the black lines leaving a little of the yellow fabric to fray eventually.  I wear it with jeans.

Red shoes

I recently attended a family wedding and had to put together an outfit on a tight budget.  I bought a dress from Ebay and used some items I already had.  These red shoes were given to me by my mum ages ago cos they were too tight for her.  They're from the Marks and Spencer Limited Collection.  Wee bit too shiny for my taste.

Armed with my trusty glue gun I added a ribbon and some deconstructed earrings.

My first post

Hi I'm Ali from Scotland.  I'm so pleased to be making my first post here :-)

I've been refashioning for a while but have only just started recording my efforts in blog form.  I blog about lots of other stuff but my whole lifestyle is based around recycling/upcycling and living life to the fullest on a tight budget.

My recent favourite refashion has been this old jacket my son was throwing out.

It was in good condition, just a bit grubby so I washed it then dyed it lavender.

I cut out some triangles backed with fabric sticky stuff and stitched them onto the back of the jacket

Voila!

 

The zips stayed white!!
