A laptop cozy

Okay, so there was this very strange vest I had - just check that weirdly shallow v-neck. It was so weird I couldn't stay still wearing it and considering its destiny. The initial idea was to transform it into a shirt, only it turned out it would be too short. Chopped, it ended up sitting around for a while.

Finally, I got a new laptop, and I sure wasn't buying a sleeve for it! So I turned to pieces of the old vest. As the vest was weirdly tailored, I had to piece the sleeve from several parts, rather then being able to make it out of a single piece of fabric. But never mind! It fits like a glove!

It fits like a glove!

Warm and cushy inside...
There are still a few pieces left so I see some other gadgets get dressed in scraps of this old&ugly vest.

Who remembers plush tracksuits?

To answer the above question... apparently, I do. A decade ago we were all wearing  plush tracksuits (mostly knock offs and no names) because they were IN. Then, we kept wearing them because they were so damn comfy!
Shamelessly, I kept my suit all these years still preferring the bottoms as my go-to home wear. Although I rarely wore the top and bottom parts together, the zipper on the top part was broken last year, and I simply couldn't find the one of right colour and length to replace it. So, this sweatshirt was sitting in my refashion pile for a while now.

I decided to stitch it up and use some fabric scraps to convert the hoodie in a fun colourful collar.

I am delighted with this save! I feel like I am going to have many cozy nights this cold spring!

Summer recap no 6 - Skirt to tunic with multi-season potential

This piece was something I had lingering around for years. I bought this piece of fabric more than 10 years ago in Ljubljana, when I needed an instant swimming suit cover-up, and once I brought it home, I have converted it in a 'skirt' without making any cuts to the fabric. Several years later, I found that darts forming the waist of the skirt became disintegrated, and I was left with something that used to be a skirt.

The print being so fun and the fabric of good quality I decided to make the simplest choice - remove remaining darts and zipper carefully and make the boat neck dress-tunic. It is perfectly fun and I plan to keep it as multi-season piece which could liven up a dark autumn combination.

Summer recap No 5 - yet another case of weird length pants

As you could tell, this summer's refashions were dedicated to dealing with several pairs of similar capri-like (or more 7/8 lenghth) pants. In this case I have used the remaining trouser length to make travely loundry pouches which come really handy then travelling!

As for the shorts, I used some checkered red and white trim for hemming and making a loop for the button at the side for rolling up the hem.

Hope you've enjoyed this curvy refash!

Summer recap no 4 - Pants double bill!

The outcome of this refashion actually gave me the idea to pursue colour blocking in my futuure refashion projects.

My sister had 7/8 pants which she didn't wear, because she prefers full length pants. On the other hand, my husband had a pair of 3/4 which he wanted turned into shorts. To make them more comfortable, I used navy bias tape for the hem, allowing me to keep more length for length for lengthening the other pair. As for the 'stacking' result - it looked good. To reinforce the part of the paints suffering from the most wear and tear, I have ironed on the adhesive fabric.

Hope you've enjoyed this curvy refash!

Summer recap no 3 - a tshirt fix

This is not a refashion, really. It is more of a recipe how to fix all those t-shirts which were mangled in the process of removing those annoying tags.

I have dyed this t shirt only to notice the holes left from removing the tag. To conceal the holes, I added a piece of decorative tape stitching it over to cover the the tears.

Now it looks like an intentional and fun detail!

Hope you find this garment fixation idea useful!

Summer recap no 2 - tunic into beach coverup

My sister gave me this tunic, but it was already quite shabby, which made it perfect for my beach dress. What it lacked in length I added from the sleeves by slicing them lengthwise.

The tunic had to be narrowed down a bit and instead of stitching at the sides I have left the ends untrimmed and tied. I used two scraps and tied the shoulder straps.

Hope you've enjoyed this curvy refash!

Summer recap No 1 - Weird pants straightened

Since I wasn't posting lately, and I had several summer projects done, I have decided to make a little series about these refashions made during the summer.

A pair of pants which had weird flare at the bottom, which looked outdated and confusing since the pants were above the ankle length.

The process was quite simple - turn inside out, pin, baste. Then try and tweak. Stitch, cut excess and zig-zag stitch. And that's done!

Rhapsody in blue!

I find dyeing clothes quite fun. The fun is about transforming your clothes batch-style! For a while, I had been collecting a pile of clothes I wanted to dye in different colours and the rainy weather was holding me back since it is always best to line-dry dyed clothes for the first time. Once the weather changed, it was time for our vacation, so this post was pending for a while now. Nevertheless, I would like to share a part of my dyeing adventure with you – and for this I chose the use of double batch of Iberia electric blue and a pile of clothes, including:
  • Men’s brown polo (the colour my husband wouldn’t wear)

  • Men’s bright green polo (with stains)

  • Khaki t-shirt with netting (the colour made me wear it… never)

  • A very pale cotton summer dress (looked like a night gown)

  • Woman’s lavender cotton shirt (with bleach stains)

I have prepared the clothes for dyeing according to directions, while you can check here how I prepped the dress for dyeing. It was transformed from a plain and boring piece into something that I actually like wearing.

Skirt rehashed (spring edition)

Most of my refashions lately are about making the clothes I have smaller. For pieces I like - I make an effort to make them smaller, those that I don't and are simply too frumpy? I give them away. But I did like this skirt and the print on it:

Only... the shape and length were more suited for sixty year old modesty-is-cool kind of model. That ain't me. So I decided to make it shorter, and while I was at it I wanted to make it cooler, or less plain. A couple of small pocket sounded like a good idea, while adding some lace trim to them really gave this skirt that 'different' look. Check it out - my trans-seasonal lace pockets skirt!

How can packet of dye and a button save a jacket?

My husband hates two things: throwing away clothes (no matter how worn out they are) and going shopping. Taking this in consideration, I find myself doing some refashions for him as well, although the rejects posing for me.

The most recent save I made was his denim jacket. It was quite dated, faded and missing a button.

So I got a packet of navy blue dye, some salt and proceeded with high temperature machine dying process. Once it was coloured, washed and dyed I had to find the replacement for a missing button:

Although I couldn't find one that was exactly the same, I managed to find one of similar golden hue that was the same size, and that was all that was to be done!

Measuring the success of a refashion by how often it is worn, I'd say this is one of my best works so far, although not as good as this cardigan which I was wearing for the most part of the winter. However, it sure is a runner up! Do you refashion your husband's clothes? Any ideas?

Yoga pants to jumpsuit aka drab to fab

Hello there fellow refashionistas! I am really happy to share quite a discovery in the refashion sphere... I have found a way to transform a drab piece which is one of the most common thing we all hide in our closets and enjoy its comfort - I give you the yoga pants!

As you can see, these became somewhat saggy since I lost some weight, and wearing them required constant pulling up, which completely annulled the whole comfort thing. Between thinking where to add elastic to these, so they could stay up, a sudden revelation hit me - why wouldn't I transform them rather then fix them? Oh, humble yoga pants - I see you future as a jumpsuit! The hottest fashion item this season!

Some seam unpicking, restitching, cutting, a piece of scrap lace and I got myself a heavenly comfortable and fabulous piece for warm summer evenings. Dear ladies, I give you the used-to-be-yoga-pants jumpsuit:

I described the process HERE how I did it, but I wouldn't go as far to call it a tutorial. I hope this inspires you to turn some of your yoga pants in summer-friendly jumpsuits.

Happy refashioning!

Grandma's shirt rehashed

Well hello! It's been a while since I have last posted. Deep apologies for that. My returning refashion has actually sitting for a while on the refashion rack. This was my grandma's shirt/blouse:

My sewing machine was causing some issues while I was at this rather simple refashion, which led me to stray from the initial (simple) plan and improvise (go to my blog if you care for details). However, I managed to finish it somehow. And I kinda like it!

Trash to fash - Week 5/52

This week's refashion was quite a suprise for me, as I wasn't sure how would it turn out until I have actually finished and tried it on and I was quite happy with it! From two old boring sweaters to a new tunic with a pop of my favorite color!

And here it is! I hope you share my delight with it, and if you do, please check out the whole post on how I did it!

Refitted shirt - 52 wks challenge 4/52

This week I did something useful. My white shirts have gotten quite big, and I have decided to re-own them. This one being the first out of several more to come. I know white shirts aren't exciting, but they are a true basic and I can't imagine my closet without them.

So here's my refashion for the week 4:

For this one, I made a little photo guide, I hope you will enjoy!

A small refashion project - make yourself some legwarmers!

As the winter continues its way through this January, and I caught a cold, I felt like being warm - so I made myself some legwarmers!

From a couple of sleeves leftover from one of the previous refashions I made a pair of cosy legwarmers.

For this particular refashion, I pride myself for some serious salvaging as these were a leftover from another refashion, and for that matter, they were rather hole-y. Yes. I believe this project to be the proper demonstration of using something that is no longer any good. Trash in one word. So please proceed to the Curvy Girl's Refashions for some magic and transforming trash to fash!

First of 52 refashions in 2015

This year I have decided to attempt doing one refashion a week and sharing them with you. In addition to this, I plan on making these refashions for updating my wardrobe or making things for my family or friends. So all refashions will have to comply to the rule of being needed and of course, worn and flaunted.

So without any further hesitation, I'd like to share with you the first 2015 refashion - a cardigan.

Cardigans are my favourite pieces of clothing, and if you like this one and want to get some insider tips on how to make one yourself, please proceed to Curvy Girl's Refashions!
