WARNING:  If you have made a New Year's resolution about decluttering your wardrobe or closet, you may not want to look at this project.  It is ridiculously quick (less than fifteen minutes), extremely cute, and very versatile.  Even the post will take less than five minutes to read.  Be careful!

Just Sew: Sweatshirt Blazer

Two very different looks created from the same sweatshirt:

After removing cuffs, neck, and bottom band, it takes about thirty minutes to add lapels and finish the edges to make a ruffly, feminine version of the grey sweatshirt.

Taking it a step further, you can dye the sweatshirt and add jersey "piping" to give it a more formal look that is still as comfy as an old sweatshirt.

Just Sew: Honeymoon Hat

Seventeen years ago this month my husband and I were married.  He was still in school and I had started my first year teaching.  Needless to say, we were pretty broke and didn't have a lot of time to take for our honeymoon, either.  We were married on a Saturday morning and we were both back at school by Tuesday.  I shared with my freshmen English students that we saw a great movie, Toy Story, that weekend.  They were appalled!  "You saw a movie on your honeymoon!?!"  I knew what they were implying, so I said, "It's not like that takes the whole time."  Imagine if they knew we went shopping, too!  Because I bought the best winter hat that weekend made of felted wool and I have never seen one in a store since.  Luckily, it has held up all this time, but this winter I am recreating it in a variety of materials.

These sew up pretty quickly (30 to 45 minutes) and although the original Honeymoon Hat shows no signs of wear and tear, it will be nice to have some different color choices.  Come over to Just Stuff for the full tutorial.

After years of eating conscientiously, our family of five began to ask the same questions about everything else we use:  "How and where was this shirt made and who might have been exploited to make it?"  We committed to only buying things secondhand or made responsibly, especially clothes.  At first I would just hem sleeves or pants, but then began adding custom patches to cover stains or logos.  Soon we began to view the Goodwill as a fabric store, and now feel our options are unlimited.

I work primarily with t-shirts and spend much of my sewing time making things for kids.  However, I am sitting on a nice stash of vintage suiting fabric and some great wool sweaters people ran through the wash and gave up on.  In theory, there will be posts featuring those materials soon.  Until then, I will share one of my favorite recent t-shirt projects:  The Peacock Necklace.

I began with a thrifted t-shirt and some scraps from my knit jersey bin.  I also pulled out my metallic silver thread which only gets used on special occasions.

Within an afternoon I had a completed necklace and loads of ideas for more.  The simple steps are found at Just Stuff.
