Jean Jacket Makeover

Last year I downsized my body, this year I’m down sizing my clothes!  This jean jacket has gone from a size 22 to a size 12/14.

This project is idea for a beginner.  It’s mostly just cutting off the parts that are too big!

I cut out the back panel and replaced it with black tshirt fabric.

The waistband was cut from an old pair of pants.

Work Shirt ReFashion

I haven't done a new refashion in ages!  I did one this weekend that I really love!

Work Shirt Refashion
My kiddo stopped working at this car dealership a long time ago, but the shirts were still in my car.  With his permission, I cut them up and turned them into a maxi dress.

Cut here
All in all I used 4 shirts for this project.  One for the bodice and 4 for the shirt.

I love the frayed edges at the neck and sleeves

I could have made a shorter skirt by only using 3 shirts.

Maxi dress
I'm in love with the final product - it reminds me of my boy!

Refashion x 3

I'm honestly not even sure that this qualifies as a refashion.  It is but it isn't.  You see for the past few months i've been working on my SheShed.  I've used old clothes and accessories to make rugs, lighting and all kinds of decor.  I'll be back to sewing soon, but for now it's all SheShed all the time.

Beaded Headband
A few years ago I went through a headband phase where I made tons of headbands.  I really liked this beaded one but it was just too heavy to wear on a regular basis.
My headband phase
We had a big family party and my dress was rather plain, so I removed the beads and added Magnolias!

Adding Magnolias and Hydrangeas

Completed Magnolia Headband
At the party
I LOVE this version of the headband, but it broke during the party.

Removed flowers from the headband
I pulled all of the flowers off the headband.  Using an old tin bucket and a lamp cord, I turned the flowers into a pendant lamp for the She Shed.

Bucket for the light

Lamp cord
The headband became a pendant lamp over my work area.

Work lamp
This was fine.  But then I decided that I didn't like the red.  I wanted an all white light fixture.
Work Table light
So I removed the red flowers and added more magnolias!

Red Hydrangeas removed

All white pendant light!
Now that it's all white, it's PERFECT!!  I'm crazy in love with this lamp and with my SheShed!

Dish Towel Refashion

Dish Towel Refashion

Honestly i'm not even sure if this counts as a refashion or not.  I needed to make a bunch of apron in a hurry so I made One Size Fits All aprons from flour sack towels.

I needed something that would fit both kids and adults.  A little twill tape and dish towels got the job done!

The best part is that because these towels come in all different colors I was able to make a bit lot of them quickly.

Adult size 18-women's
Kids sizes 10 & 14
These aprons are all the same size!

Skirt to Top

Skirt to top ReFashion
When I saw this skirt at Goodwill I knew that I had to have it.  It's not really my style but it seemed like it would make a great top.

Original Skirt
The beauty of this top is that it didn't take long to make and relatively little sewing was required.  Using a seam ripper I removed the waist band seam where I wanted the arm holes to be.
Remove a portion of the waist band

Create arm holes
With a good portion of the waist band removed I tried on the top to make sure that the arm holes were comfortable.

Dip Dye ReFashion

I've been playing with Rit Dye a lot.  Some things have worked out well others have not.  I made this plain white dress from a duvet.

BEFORE
I liked the dress but it was a little to plain for me.  PLUS after my last dye adventure I had LOTs of left over dye.

Dip dye using a pretzel bucket
I dip dyed this dress using a left over pretzel bucket.  This technique allowed me to soak the dress over night without spilling dye on to the white part of the garment.

This time around I set the dye using Washing Soda (thank you internet) the the dark dye stayed put!

The tutorial for this look is on my blog:

Skirts / Dresses from Bed Sheets

I knew that I had a lot of skirts and dresses that i'd made from bed sheets.  I somehow lost track of how many i'd made until I decided to put them all together in 1 post.

All of these dresses used to be bed sheets.

Headband Refashion

I don't do a lot of accessory refashions but these headbands were fun and easy.  I had a couple of headbands that needed a little pazazz!  I added beads to one and flowers to another.

Before
I'm trying to decide if i'm a headband kind of girl.  Since my head is too big for hats headbands have become my go to accessory for head decoration.
After #1
The bead headband is for wearing to work and every day activities.

After #2
The floral headband is for a Kentucky Derby Tea party that i'm attending in Louisville tomorrow.

All you need to make either one of these is embroidery floss and beads (or flowers).  A little hot glue holds everything together!

I kind of love this!

Both of these tutorials are available on my blog

Rit Dye Failure

ReFashion Miss
I REALLY wanted to use the Watercolor Dye Technique to make a dress for an upcoming Brunch.

My goal was to use my Rit Dye Skills to create something like this:

Goal Dress
After hand painting a white cotton sheet with deep layers of Rit Dye I was thrilled with the wet fabric!

Wet Fabric
Even if it faded a little, I figured that it would still be perfect!  After drying overnight the fabric was muddy and faded.

Too washed out!
In the end I used rubbing alcohol and fabric paint to try and save this project.

Mix up a miracle
I was happier, though not totally thrilled, with the result!

Spray Painted / Dyed Fabric
I ended us using the fabric to make a dress, but i'm not sure that i'll ever love it enough to wear it.

Meh!

For now she sit on a dress form in my attic.
