French striped dress from a mens t shirt tutorial

It has been a little while since I have posted here at Refashion co-op and I am glad to be back!

I posted my French Mariniere Hand painted dress tutorial below on Monday and am now sharing it here too.

My tutorial  for the French Mariniere t- shirt dress.

This dress was a part of my signature look for the Project Run and play Flick pool:

This is a very simple dress to make. 

I have had a love affair for the Mariniere tee for years now and it seems I am not he only one. I have some good company!

Are you convinced yet that this is a great look and that you need one too?

 Although the Mariniere is easy to find outside of France for adults, finding them for children is very difficult so I decided to make one for Gigi.

Here are the directions for the tutorial:

Materials needed:

An adult white t shirt from the hobby shop

marine blue fabric paint

a small paintbrush

wooden or sailor type anchor buttons

a sewing machine

Girls Overalls Made From Dish Towels!

Here is a fun pair of toddler overalls I made from some dishtowels. I was inspired by the utility overalls factory girls wore in the 1940's.

Toddler house robe from a thrifted cashmere sweater

I started this project as a refashioned sweater idea for myself but the center front became horribly stretched out.

I threw it on my toddler one chilly morning and decided to turn it into a cozy house robe for her!

It's so simple. Cut off the collar, slit it up the middle, and trim the edges with bias trim. To see more Visit my blog!

Tangerine sweater refashion!

Pantone has declared Tangerine to be the official color of 2012. Not being shy to jump on any bandwagon, I pulled out an old sweater I had in my stash. It had already been shrunken when I bought it at the thrift shop for a dollar and it was perfect for another quick and easy toddler dress refashion!

A Refashioned Sweater To Toddler Dress Tutorial

I love, love, love, cashmere but I dont like spending a fortune on it. I have never seen a baby sweater for kids for under fifty dollars either. A fifties curtain into a sheath

I found a lone curtain at the thrift shop for $1.50. It looked like a fifties Batik Tiki print so how could I pass it up? Surely I could fit it in my fabric bin ?

 I was inspired by the Sew Weekly Challenge last week to make something from some home linens. I just love Mena's site but I never can seem to get my projects done in time to post them over there. I am usually knee deep in some other project started over the weekend and getting a dress sewn, taking some halfway decent photos of me in it, and uploading it in 5 days is a tall order, even for quick sewist like me.

But I will be posting this at Refashion co-op thanks to one of their friendly e-mail reminders that if I don't post at least once a month I will get removed from the contributors list!

So back to my dress. I was seeing a sheath dress from this Tiki Afro fabric but the problem was I had only about a yard and a quarter of fabric from the curtain and it was only 45 inches wide. Here is the pattern I used

McCall's 5927

The pattern called for almost two yards of sixty inch fabric. Of course, most patterns ask for way too much fabric so I figured I could squeeze it in. Here is how I did it:

I'm not super thrilled with this dress. It was one with an adjustable bust and I chose the D cup. I think it is a little big in that department, so if you choose this pattern I would recommend you size it down a cup. 

• I omitted the neck and armhole facings, instead trimming them with bias tape.
• I didn't have enough fabric to cut the front bodice on the fold so I had to fit it on the fabric as two separate pieces with a seam down the center front which I think looks a little odd.
• I didn't have enough fabric for the extra pocket lining piece so I just finished the raw edge of the pocket with bias tape and sewed the pocket directly down to the front skirt piece
