I'm currently doing a similar thing: refashioning a dress I made from thrifted fabric years ago... Hopefully I'll be able to post it soon.

Took some blog snooping on my part, but I finally figured out that you took apart a slip dress, raised the waist to bodice height and added straps! Yay!
