Sweatpants

Figured I'd slip a quick project in late this afternoon, and this was the easiest one in my pile! Cotton & Curls did this in December, and I immediately put it on my list of things to do...as soon as I found a pair of sweatpants! These were thrifted for $2:

I cut them off just above the hem, took them in a bit, then used some elastic and gathers to create these side gathers. Quick, easy, and a cute update for regular old sweats! Perfect for lounging around :)

Check out the Cotton & Curls' tutorial at the link above or hop over here to see mine.

Andrea

***Update: Tartan Refashion

***Update: so, I did end up adding that zipper :) Hop on over here to check it out!

Soooo, who goes into the thrift store and comes out with some crazy plaid/tartan pants?

Well, for $2 on half-off day, I do! Don't they suit me?

Maybe a little big, but that simply means there is a lot of extra fabric to work with! So, after chopping off the legs, unpicking the crotch and waistband, pinning it to my shape/size and sewing everything thing (minus the legs and a few scraps) back together, I have myself a new skirt!

Those legs (minus 8-9 inches) got sewed together and along with a couple of brassy buttons and a piece from some thrifted suspenders, were transformed into a crazy cool cowl scarf that I can slip on over my head (well, it does muss my hair a bit but I'm not fussy).

AND there are still all those scraps left over...but I'll leave them for another day :). If you'd like to check out the tutorials for both, hop on over here.

Here's the final before and afters:

Hope you like these two!

Peace,
Andrea

CAPRI REFASHION: to cute summer shorts

HELLO, NEW SHORTS!

I had the intention of simply cropping the capri pants to fit my height. Once I started cutting, I realized I needed a few more pairs of short once the warmer weather rolled around.

SIMPLE ROLLED CUFFS

I simply rolled the bottom for a simple cuff and then sewed the the side edges for extra strength. I tried my best to hand stitch hidden stitches in the cuff area to prevent the cuffs from unrolling.

I LOVE BUTTONS!

To make the shorts even cuter, I added a button on each side of the sewn edges. Perfect shorts for a warm summer day.

Leggings to socks!

Happy Friday!

Just a quick one today...I took a pair of $1 thrifted leggings and turned them into thigh-highs/boot socks.

Then, after altering a pair of running leggings, I decided to make use of my machine's decorative stitches and used a contrasting thread to add a little detail.

And if you want to see the process on the socks or help me decide on what color to use on my other running leggings ;) you can hop on over here and here.

Andrea

Boy's Shorts

Hey! Magda E. from House of Estrela here. Still showing you my refashions for the Refashion Month Series last month, today I will bring you a pair of shorts I did for my nephew.
I used a pair of adult jeans for the main shorts and used a piece from a skull printed bag of mine I was wearing for years, but felt terrible hard to part with.

The bonus? My nephew, who's 8 and generally doesn't like much what I make him anymore, loved this ones.

Save the Jeans - Jean Rescue Refashion

I'm not sure exactly what my son does, but somehow every pair of jeans we own has a hole in the right knee.
Every.
Single.
Pair.

Holes are cool and everything, but I like him to look like he hasn't been dragging himself around on the ground like an animal.

Plus, the kid is getting TALL!  He is still thin enough to fit in his size 7 jeans, but they are starting to look a bit like pedal pushers or capris.  He got a few new pairs of 8's at Christmas, but we can never have enough jeans for this kid.  He's a pants only kind of boy.  His own personal preference.

I decided to take a pair of the 7's and see if I could lengthen them and patch the hole in a way that still is cool enough to wear to school without ridicule.

First, I cut the jeans at the knees where the hole was, but on both legs.
Then I took a pair of old jeans from my stash (save ALL denim).
The bottoms I used were an old pair of his size 6 jeans, I think.
You can use any pair of jeans, though.
They don't need to be the same size.
It was a little easier to do with existing jeans, because I could use one existing seam, if not both.
If you use an adult size pair of jeans, you just have to create your own seams on each side.
I'll explain the process in more detail on my blog.

Here is the finished product!  My son ended up with 3 "new" pairs of jeans.

And my daughter even got a pair, too!

I like it way better than the big right side knee hole look.
What are these kids doing at school anyway???
Any bets on how long until one of them comes home with a hole in their jeans?

Red Velvet Jacket

Hey! Magda E. from House of Estrela here. This past month I have hosted a refashioning series in my blog, but not only I had lots of guests sharing their inspirational works with us, I have also achieved my goal of at least 4 refashion items done during the month. I could have done more if I didn't get a huge flu and been in bed for days.

The first things I did was turning this pair of red velvet pants...

... into a new jacket for my daughter.

And oh boy, do I love it? Read more about it HERE.

Harem Pants!

Say, what? Yep, I did it. I totally jumped on the harem pant bandwagon...BUT I went with a more modified version. So, the question is, can I really call them harem pants, or not? I guess maybe they'll just be pants. Plain and simple ;).

Here's where I started. I posted this picture yesterday on my FB page asking for suggestions on what to do with this lovely number.

The first response was harem pants...now, I had been pondering the same idea, but I guess I lacked the confidence because I wasn't sure I'd like the outcome.  A couple of other ideas were for an infinity scarf (great because I wasn't sure how I felt having this as an overall print and as an accessory it would be much more manageable) and shorts/pajama shorts (also a possibility if I didn't like how the pants turned out).

My first step was to determine how and how much I would take in the legs of the pants. I did a little research on harem pant styles and landed on this as my inspiration pair. Seriously, she hit all the nails on the head: I don't love the dropped crotch, too much give in the legs...I wanted something more streamlined!

I ended up taking in the legs, and changing the waistband by taking out the elastic in the front, creating two pleats and then sewing the elastic back onto the front for contrast.

Here's how they look on (without having pressed my seams....I know!!! I just reaaaally don't like ironing, but I promise I'll do it):

I just rolled up the hems a couple of times in these shots, but I've considered adding an elastic band to the hems for a couple of reasons: It allows for adjusting the length and creating a little more of the "harem" look, and it would tie in with the black waistband. BUT I got another amazing idea from the same person who said "harem pants"...zippers at each leg hem! Hello! It allows for the taper, and I can get them on and off over my feet :) So, I'll post that update once I've found two zippers to use (I have a current shortage and will have to scour the thrift store for more).

Here's one last look at the before and after:

So, now I need to hear from you! What do you think about harem pants in general, and these in particular? I'd love to hear from you :-) As always, you can get more detail on how I did this here...

Peace,
Andrea

A new year a new dress!

Happy new year everyone!
For my 1st refashion of the year I took one pair of thrifted mens pj pants and turned them into a sweet summer dress. This refashion was spur of the moment without a pattern so ended up being abit of "trial & error" but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

Pants Refashion

I took these old flared outdated slacks and cut then down to match a pair of new tapered legs pants
hope you like them.  first I placed them on my table both flat and then decided the best way proceed would be to fold the pants then trace out with chalk.  I then used my serger to cut and stitch.  the I used my regular sewing machine to hem them with a straight stitch. Now I am on trend!
