Stash Necklace

Here is on of my new line of refashioned necklaces. I use vintage silk blouses and scarves to create the sewn spaghetti.  Mixed together with beads from my stash of baubles, wooden rings and various bits of tee shirts and yarn from unraveled sweaters, I have lots of fun creating them! One of the pieces of yarn came from a silk sweater that I unraveled, had to re-spin on an improvised drop spindle, then dyed with Kool-Aid in my kitchen. The big twiggy balls came from a potpourri mix. Fun, fun, fun!! I'll be listing more on my blogs and in my etsy shops soon.

In other editorial news...please check out the info at the top of the column on the left, and on our About page. The ReFashion Co-op editors have been hard at work discussing how we should encourage contributors to posting about wearable refashioned items. Please let us know if what we have posted is clear, friendly and makes sense.  And stay tuned! It may change again! :)
Thanks for playing!

Streamlining things around here!

Hey everyone! Jenni here (editor on duty today...)

We've decided to eliminate the Contributor Page in favor of the wonderful introductions you've all been making. If properly tagged, with your username and "introductions" then they will be easily searchable AND you each can update or repost new info about yourselves. The Editors hope this will make it faster and easier to meet each other, and visit new blogs!

Also, please note that ONLY approved tags are shown on the left side of the blog. There is currently no search bar. So if you want your posts listed in categories you MUST use the approved tags. If you think we are missing an important tag, please shoot us an email!

As a reminder, this blog can only accommodate 100 Authors. We require each of you to post at least once per month to stay as an Author/Contributor. Once we hit that 100th person, we will need to start deleting those who don't post. You can always reapply later though. So if you are refashioning, get posting! :)

Thanks so much to all of you contributors and readers. There has been so much support for Refashion Co-op we are soooo excited! Keep sewing!

Progress...

I may have bit off more than I can chew, and discovered why skirt-to-tunic refashions are not more popular!
:)  Here is my in-progress project. It's not pressed yet, and you can tell. Let me saw it looks FAR better on the mannequin than on me. Sigh. At the moment, it is looking a bit like a dental assistant is going sailing!

Here's what I did so far:
  • opened up the pocket to make the armholes. This I thought was brilliant. We shall see.
  • sewed up the shoulder seam, from top of pocket to about 4" from center. (across what used to be the waist)
  • the V neck is where the zipper used to be
  • took a side seam from just below pocket, into waist at an angle and then back out to hem. (A big triangle cut out of what was formerly the side of the skirt.)
  • I wanted the handerchief points. We shall see
  • I do LOVE the mix of prints. Just might not be right yet.
So far, that is all. The waist band here is pinned. So is the black material around the neckline. The bow is actually the collar from the shirt the black fabric came from. The collar shape as bow has potential for someone. Perhaps not me. We shall see...

I was aiming for something Anthropologie-like. There is still WAY too much volume in the peplum. I was considering an exposed zipper in the back, but was trying to keep it loose enough that I didn't need to go there. Might HAVE to go there! As I said, there is still a lot of volume!!
I may lose the bat wing sleeves. (I'm sleeping on it!)  But wanted to share my progress. You all are so accomplished with this king of thing, I wanted to document my fits and starts on this, my first real refashion!

Suggestions welcome. As we've noted though, I may not take them! hehehehehe
Thanks anyway!

What Would You Do? (WWYD)

I've been totally swamped with work and family stuff for awhile, but just *perhaps* time is opening up today! I've got a lot on my plate for this morning, but maybe I will be able to squeeze in some sewing time this afternoon.

Picked up this tiny skirt yesterday, as I am in love with this fabric! It's a nice 100% cotton, almost voile with a Liberty of London feel. The waistband is soooo small it won't even fit my dress form, nevermind me!

What to do with it? There are currently inseam pockets and a side zipper, that is broken. Lots of inverted pleats and perhaps 4 yards of width at the hem! A simple flowy tank top would be doable, but perhaps not take advantage of the amount of fabric.

I have a large ribcage and a smallish waist, so no empire styles for me. Hating my arms and knees right now...:) so no short little dresses. What Would You Do??

Looking forward to seeing more posts from our contributors, and welcoming new ones today, as I am Editor On Duty for now! (Such fun to fiddle!) Did you see the new sign up form on the right of our blog? Send your friends!

Happy sewing!

Introductions! Refashion Editor: Jenni

Shift #2! My turn...
I'm Jenni. You can read a little more about me on the Editor page. Although I didn't participate at Wardrobe Refashion, I have always created new out of old. I looks forward to being inspired by and getting to know you all!

Here is my interview...

How did you get into refashioning?
Long ago, my 5th grade teacher passed out certificates, acknowledging each student's special talent. Mine read, “Jenni will forever be known for making something out of nothing.” (I don't believe she was referring to making mountains out of molehills, but it is entirely possible.) I think my teacher had noticed that, I made dollhouse décor out of scraps of stuff. A mini dining table out of carved wood dominoes, framed tiny art works out of clear topped jewelry box lids, and Thanksgiving turkeys out of walnuts, with Q-tip drumsticks. Even then, I was always collecting cool stuff. I still have some African beads that I bought with classroom bucks at our monthly trading day!
So I have always had an eye for seeing things for what they could be, not just what they are.

What is your motivation for refashioning?
I get immense satisfaction from creating something fresh out of old, for less money than buying new. I love to synthesize looks from different elements. I think even if I had lots of money, I would still prefer to create than simply go to the mall.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Usually, the item itself speaks to me. A fabulous color or pattern of silk in an old loose shirt will say “make me fitted, with a cute peplum!” I love fashion magazines, and retro looks. I am an interior designer and a jewelry designer — I see inspiration everywhere!

Which techniques do you use in your refashions?
I am always experimenting. Often a simple applique is a quick addition that makes something “meh” into “wow!” I am currently fascinated by vintage sewing machines. I have a zig zag attachment that has just the cutest stitches that I want to play with soon!

Where do you find things to refashion?
My addiction to thrift stores knows no bounds. If I bought nothing else EVER I would still have plenty of material to work with for the rest of my days. Honestly, it is a problem. I see value in just about everything, and “need” to have critical mass in order to create. Luckily, I have a large studio and a wonderful husband.

What is your favorite refashion?
The last one! Here is a thrifted sweater turned vest. I removed the pilly old sleeves, and the track-suit like zipper and made it a little cooler! The alpaca yarn is sooo soft and warm!
I am hoping to spend more time refashioning clothing in the next year. I used to sew a lot, and haven't in quite a while. Currently I'm pondering how to deal with the doubled back yoke on a men's shirt if I take the collar and button placket off. Any ideas? Bind the edge? Zig zag it? Maybe I will just flip it, and use the hem at the shoulders!

Do you recycled anything other than fashion?
For the last few years, I have been creating jewelry out of recycled sweaters. I am starting to add other repurposed items into the jewelry, like silk scarves, wooden spools with thread, vintage buttons and buckles.

Prior to that, we did a major remodel on our home, and created lots of things for the house! A bathroom sink from a bowl...planters from stock feed tanks...closet doors as window coverings, etc. I love to create vignettes of vintage and new things together, and have a couple of chairs that recently followed me home that need reupholstering.

Where can I read more about you and refashioning?
You can find me all over the place!
