Velvet, in a new light...

Hello!

So as it's the first week in the Refashion Runway All Stars edition, there was no getting away from it - velvet was the challenge! And my personal challenge was also making it less...wintry. I chose a dress I made back in November for a wedding, using a McCall's pattern...

That's such a dark photo, sorry! The lighting was terrible... so here's another shot, taken from the back (in a lift!) - showing the huge cowl neck...

I realised it was very unlikely I'd wear it again anyway - so got to work on it... I removed the cowl, kept the lining, added shape with darts, a new waistline, and faux pockets - whilst also adding spaghetti straps... I also gave it a high-lo hem, to give it more 'swing'!
Here's a quick look at the bodice details...

And here a full length!

I can't wait to see what all the other ladies come up with - it really is SUCH a challenge, and a privilege to be part of the line-up!

Check the full back drop to my make here - and don't forget to head to Beth's site to see all the fabulous entries, and vote for your favourite!!

Until next week...

Fabulous, I really like the spaghetti straps!

The original was really pretty but I can see why you might not have an occasion to wear it often. The new dress is so nice and just as pretty. I love the straps. Great job.

The original dress looked so good you must be pretty strong willed to go ahead and refashion it. Know what you mean about finding nothing in the shops though, even charity has gone seasonal.

Thank you so much Chickie :) It's one of those things really - the other was a bit more 'dramatic', and I don't go to many occasions that demand drama! ;)

I don't know about strong willed, desperate more like, haha! Actually, the more I looked at the 'before' shots, the less I liked the dress...do you ever do that? It seemed to look baggy to me, and I went off it... I'll probably end up feeling the same about this one - so I'd better wear it quick!!
And yes, I suppose, commercially speaking, it's viable for charity shops to do that - I mean, who wants to buy or wear velvet in this weather?! Haha!
