Halloween Refash 2018

It has arrived! (and passed) The most fun day for a refashioner, Halloween!!!
This year I have decided to be a sassy witch!

DSCN1688.JPG
I purchased this witch dress from the Halloween store and as you can see it does not have a very sassy fit. It just hangs on me. Thank goodness I will use this as a starter for my costume because after all this is a refashion!

DSCN1690
I purchased 3 spools of Halloween tulle: Orange glitter tulle, green spiderweb tulle, regular purple tulle and black bat ribbon. I cut these into strips and added them in between the fabric strips of the witch dress.

Once the strips of Halloween tulle were pinned, it was time to start sewing!
Now onto making the top part of the dress....

I had this corset in my to-be refashed pile. So glad I had this in stock!

Since I was going with mostly black and purple for my costume I used a purple fabric marker to color the white threads of the appliques on the corset.
What witches costume isn't complete with accessories?!
First up: Shoes!

\Thrifted these beautiful pointed black heels!

I wanted to put some glitz on these babies! I painted the shoes with modge podge, sprinkled on black glitter for the shoe and purple glitter for the heel. Once this coat was dry I then painted on another coat of modge podge to seal the glitter! (It is best to paint and glitter in small sections and use a foam brush!)

All dry and sparkly!

I then cut 2 square buckles out of a cereal box. Painted black with acrylic paint and sprinkled with purple glitter while the paint was still wet. Once that dried I sealed with a coat of modge podge. Then I hot glued them to my witch shoes.
Don't worry! I didn't forget about the hat!

My favorite part of refashioning is doing hats! On this on I added a series of feathers and a black rose.

To top it off I added a plastic spider attached with fishing line to the tip of my hat.

The hubby always insists on buying this costumes at the Halloween store. This year he decided to be Dr. Steven Strange. Who my hubby's name is also Steven.

I do believe he has a great likeness!

Last minute ideas for New Years drinks

Hi everyone, happy New Year! January is usually the month for new years drinks: a happy hour with the neighbours or a holiday party at work to ring in the new year. A chance to give your outfit some extra sparkle! This inspired me to do a throwback post on ideas for a last minute festive outfit. And of course, all projects are done by our own Refashionistas!

🌟 🌟 🌟

Split sleeve blouse

Let's start with this simple yet chic refashion (and my personal favourite), a split sleeve top by Pivot Point Patterns. She made it from a velour top, which is perfect for this time of year. She spotted the idea in a post by Laura (the Accidental Seamstress) and loved it so much, she decided to try it herself.

Laura actually copied her 'Vine and Dine' split sleeve blouse from Beth Huntington, the Renegade Seamstress. So we could say the split sleeve blouse is one of Refashion Co-ops own classics! Anyone else want to try it? (Yes, me, me!)

Circus (lace) blouse

Carissa covered stains on the yoke of her 'circus' blouse with lace. Such a smart idea! The blouse had a beautiful print with little ponies, clowns and cute dancing ballerinas. She used the lace from an old bra (!) and it really made the blouse look very elegant. Styled with a black pencil skirt and black belt she looks ready for a New Years party!

Party proof cardigan

If you're the shivering type, like me, you could probably use some extra warmth around your shoulders. What about turning your basic (boring) cardigan into a party proof cardigan? A few sparkling buttons can make all the difference! I also cut the bottom and added a jacquard jersey hem and matching cuffs to give the cardigan an upgrade. Perfect for a happy hour with friends or neighbours, cheers!

Holiday Cocktail Party dress

Mary Alexa's Holiday Cocktail Party dress might take up a little more time, but is so cute and festive! And look at the bow. The idea is simple and elegant: she made the dress from a cropped top and a cut out circle skirt. The dress looks beautiful, with an almost golden skirt and the bow on the back, wow!

No-sew Party dress

If you're a fan of no-sew projects and have little time, this No-sew black party dress is a great idea. Chickie (I can work with that) made this little black dress from a big man's shirt and combined it with a see through button up blouse, tied in the front. The whole outfit just looks very flattering and you'd never guess it's a no-sew outfit!

You might want to add a pair of glittery tights if it's cold outside (I would:)). And if black is not your colour, (or not in your husbands stash), I can totally imagine this dress being made from a dark red or blue shirt.

Glittery accessories to complete your outfit!

Let's not forget about your shoes and accessories! Here are a few amazing ideas on how to add glitter to them:

- You can paint your shoes with mod podge and sprinkle on glitter. Or if you're feeling bold, why not cover your heels in 2 different colours like the RefashStash did!.

- For more shoe-inspiration, take a look at this Glitter Shoe Make-over by Nina!

- And here's a great idea for a sparkling evening bag. Tailor promises this Evening party clutch is done in an hour...

- And last but definitely not least: Emme turned her old reading glasses into glitter-tactic eyewear. It just looks fantastic, doesn't it?

Hope you're inspired by this sparkly throwback! I really enjoyed diving into these festive projects and putting them in the spotlight again. I may try a project myself, I'm sort of snowed in here so plenty of time... I wish you all a creative sew year!

From basic to party proof cardigan

A few years ago, I bought this grey basic cardigan. Unfortunately, the cardigan turned out to be a little too basic, I hardly wore it... I decided to give it a upgrade so it could go with my new sequin top (can't resist a good sparkle) on New Year's Eve.

This post is not so much a refashion as it is about a change of style. I was going for a party proof style and a few simple and effective alterations made all the difference!

Need more sparkling inspiration? Check out last years' post on DIY glitter shoes!

Happy New Year to everyone!

One post, two re-dos, red shoes, blue shoes

I've been busy with shoe refashions lately, and I'm really happy with the results! The first pair has no "before" picture because, when I bought them from the thrift store, I thought they were perfect. But after wearing them around, I had the shock of finding my feet covered in icky white paint. I cut up some fabric and glued it in as a new lining, and, as an afterthought, left a tiny bit of it sticking up for a little pop of color.

The second pair used to be some very nice walking shoes that I wore once for months on end. Sadly, they looked worn out and completely faded.
I painted the blue parts, and ended up using glitter hot glue over the beige. I'm not sure if it will hold up, but it looks very sparkly and very glossy. Then I put in some blue elastic laces for a final touch.
Now I can slip these on anytime, though I hope the weather stays cool enough to wear them!
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Gold Shoes Neon Laces

Remember I asked you to vote on what I should do to my plain white converse style shoes from Goodwill outlet?
Well studs got the most vote :) But being the way I am, Being Zhenya, I decided there wasn’t enough glitter in my life, so I got some fabric paint at Jo-Ann’s for under $3 and got painting today!
I also substituted the boring white laces, for neon yellow ribbon!
On a sad note: remember the t-shirt I was refashioning? The one with a church on it? Well it wasn’t turning out the way I wanted, and I knew that even if I dyed it (yes, that’s what I was going to do), I still wouldn’t wear it. And I just don’t do those kind of refashions. So I cut the lace back off, tossed the shirt in the trash, and moved on! If you are an experienced DIYer like me, you know that not everything is going to turn out the way you want, and you shouldn’t get upset over it. Maybe I’ll try that same idea some other time, and be more careful and precise then!
I hope you enjoyed today’s refashion, please let me know what you think!
xo,
Zhenya

Shoe Refashion: Glitter Espadrilles

I've been really inspired by all of the shoe re-fashions here, that I wanted to try one for myself.  Like all of my re-fashions this was a total experiment...

Before - shoes from the $1.00 bin at thrift store
After - sparkly with tulle bow and lace up strap = priceless ;)
