Dress into Flowing Skirt

So I had this lovely dress that I got for a friends wedding. The only problem was it was way too dressy for me to wear on a day to day basis and I still loved the colour.

I chopped the top off and turned the hem down and made myself a great flowing skirt.
I now wear it all the time and get so many lovely comments about it! Gotta love that!!

Easter Peplum Top

Hello people !

I don't have a lot of time to sew lately but I found a tutorial that struck my eye - a refashioned peplum top.

So I had this too-large turtleneck in a funky hot pink leopard print that would be perfect for this:

Here it is before:

Holey Tee, Batman!

I had this lovely, low-back tee in a beautiful solid blue. Unfortunately, it had a few little holes in the front, just under the neck edge.

Embellished Tee

So I decided to make some more holes, bigger holes! And I used up some fabric remnants while I was at it.

Skirt to tunic 2

This skirt was made from the same pattern as the one on my previous post. However this time I was unable to find any leftover fabric to use in the refashion, so I had to be a bit more careful with the bits.

This is the skirt.

Lovely fabric, isn't it?

I cut off the hip yoke and removed the gathers. Narrowed the skirt leaving pieces wide enough to make sleeves. Used the hip yoke to make 1 back shoulder and 2 front shoulder yokes. Gathered the skirt onto the yokes, leaving gaps for armholes. Cut new sleeves following a T shirt and fitted them. Made a v neck at the front, and a smooth curve at the back. Used scraps of fabric to face the neckline.
I made a tuck at the centre front to take in a bit of excess fabric before facing. Might take a bit out of the back too, it's a bit baggy.

I'm really pleased with this, it's a useful addition to my wardrobe, to wear with leggings and boots.

My New Spring Coat

...is a great stash buster!  Maybe I can even wear it now that the weather promises to warm up a bit...
All made from my fabric stash!
- except for the base of camel-colored embossed velveteen which I got for 90% off at the fabric store down the block that was going out of business.
it even has self-made bias tape around the hem and collar!

Lest you think I'm a genuis, I did use this Koos pattern
now out of print

It took days to figure out what fabric scraps to use together.  And for some pieces, I used all I had left - like the sleeves, the off-white collar/ yoke/ stripe, or the big floral patch.  The rest just made it with a tad left over.  Now for some details:

psst...the collar does match up in real life
that's stitched-on variegated gold silk ribbon

Put a Ruffle on it!

What a sad little shirt.

I know! Put a ruffle on it!

There might even be a french seam in your future :).

Spring Has Sprung!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I believe winter has overstayed its welcome. Now, I could just ask it to leave, but my mother raised me to be a gracious hostess. Instead, I'll busy myself with recreating sundresses, dropping not-so-subtle hints about how it's getting awfully late, and doesn't winter have a thing to get to in the morning? (Passive aggressive... Gracious and welcoming... They're pretty much the same thing, right?) I've busied myself with one of this year's spring and summer dresses. It's a bright floral print, and reminds me of something the Church Lady would wear if she felt like getting tarted up a bit.

Well isn't that special?

I started by removing the sleeves and the collar. Since the dress was billowy up top, I chose to give my seam ripper a rest (it really needed it after last time) and just cut off the excess with my shears. Then I fiddled with the top until I figured out roughly how much fabric to cut away to make a halter-ish neckline.

Confession: I really don't know what I'm doing with this one.

At this point, I realized I didn't know what to do next. I wanted to finish the edges of the sides/arms, but wasn't sure how to go about it.  I thought about it for a while, and decided to try sewing some no-stretch lacy seam binding from my stash of weird and colorful notions. I pinned the lace to the right side of the edge, sewed it on, flipped in inside out, and then sewed the binding down...

When all else fails, wing it.

...And I didn't like it. I wasn't about to rip it all out. (I wasn't feeling very patient, but you probably knew that from my opening.) I dug back into my stash and found some teal single-fold bias tape that complemented the floral print. After playing around with the pleats in the front of the dress, I pressed the single-fold bias tape, making it double-fold. Then I pinned it to the top and the edges, and sewed everything in place by hand.

Why do I make things so much more difficult than they need to be?

I also added a few (crooked) darts to the back of the dress to remove some of the bulk. After the bias tape had been attached to the edges of the dress, I decided to make a floral accent from a portion of the remnants. I twisted a scrap of fabric into a tight tube, carefully wrapped it into a snail shape, and then sewed the coils together in the back. Much to my surprise, everything was coming together.

I love it when a plan comes together.

After a half dozen more tweaks and touch-ups, I think the dress is finally ready for this weekend. And I'm definitely ready for this weekend's rising temperatures! (Mid 60's!)

What would the Church Lady say about this scandalous dress?

I'll probably toss on a cardigan for church Sunday, but after that my shoulders will finally see sunlight! Through a layer of sunscreen, of course.

What are your weekend plans?

An anti-fail shirt refashion

Hiya! I've been having some tragic fails with my refashioning lately, but finally came through with the goods on this one.

Starting point was this men's dress shirt in a pretty, stretchy woven fabric:

I'm not much of an off-the-cuff designer, so I tend to use patterns to help me along with my refashions. For this I used a pattern from Burda Magazine June 2011. The pattern used a side zipper - I can't stand side zippers, I'm not sure why - but I used the existing button closure, which I switched around to the back for my shirt.

There were a couple of hairy moments when I unpicked the original darts only to find the teeny holes the pattern markers used, but the darts I was adding in just needed a nudge in the right direction to cover those up.

If you want the full story, head over to the blog. And have a happy Easter - or just enjoy the long weekend!

Upcycled T-shirt Jewelry

Hi All,

I am a little embarrassed to admit this but 2 years ago I decided to do what I call my 20 t-shirt upcycing challenge.  The plan is to make 20 t-shirts in new stuff and use up all 20 t-shirts.  As you might expect my pieces have gotten a little smaller over the last 2 years and while I didn't think it would take me this long I am at least still progressing.  This jewelry is my latest accomplishment.  You can see more photos and details here.

Happy Upcycling,

Cindy @ Upcycled Design Lab
