My first post and first re-fashion.
Hello all at the co-op. This is my first post and I am really happy to be joining your group. I am a bag designer and learning dressmaking, how to use patterns etc and I am loving it.
This is my second item of clothing ever and my first re-fashion item. I finished it yesterday.
I took a charity shop dress, I bought because I loved the bottom half.
And a much loved summer dress I had that no longer zipped over the hips.

This looks awesome! I would just slap a big bow around it to cover up the zipper in the back, it's not a big deal though, so hakuna maatata it still is just really cute.

Great job on marrying these two items.
You could just topstitch around the zipper and call it a "design detail"!

Both good suggestions from Jenni and usualbeing. One more idea would be a modified bustle. Less pouf and much flatter, more like a placket with a few box pleats or inverted pleats.
You need to do two things to fix that. One, take the zipper out and put in a black zipper. Two, baste the back seems together, stich in your zip, then take out the basting. This will ensure there is not a gap. Or you could put in a an inviasble zipper.
Alicia had some good idea's... but, sometimes when we refashion... it's not always about doing what is exactly right.... sometimes we have to make do with what we have. Have you considered trying to use a fabric pen? If you don't have a darker zipper to replace this lighter colored one...try using a fabric pen to darken up the fabric... it would hide this detail.. Or maybe even taking the zipper out and dyeing it? Just a thought... great job though.. it looks really nice!
I see this is an older post but if anyone ever encounters a situation where there's not quite enough fabric to close the gap, it's a good place to put a lacing detail. The backing fabric might not match perfectly but that wouldn't be obvious under the laces.
