A Two For One!

The last refashion I completed in the tunic series left me with part of a skirt.  I could have just hemmed it and added it to my wardrobe, but quite honestly, I have too many skirts already.  I decided it would be better served as a simple peasant dress for one of my little granddaughters.  To recap, this was the before and after of the tunic:

And the following pictures are my best attempt at photographing a VERY busy toddler.  I think it was easier making the dress than taking the pictures!!

Thanks!

Dress from a Shower Curtain

Last week I posted about the dresses that I'd made from sheets.  I was looking through the sheet dress pictures when I remembered that I'd also made dresses from SHOWER CURTAINS!

Dress from a Shower Curtain
I basically cut off the grommets and made a skirt.

When I made this white shower curtain dress I used the holes meant to hold shower hooks as the waistband.

Waistband from shower hook holder
I still have a lot of mixed feelings about this dress, but for my purposes, it works.

The Overwhelming Denim Suit

Hello Refashion Co-op. I found this unique suit at a clothes swap. It was so well made but it was too embellished for me to pull off. But I always try to find a way to refashion unusual items to work for me,

I was a little overwhelmed by the jacket so I focused on the skirt. It was stretched out in the elastic waist but it fit well through the hips and caboose. It was obviously too long too.

Here you can see what I cut off. The pockets added bulk to my tummy. I have I have plenty of tummy so I decided to remove them. I made a big cut right between the upper navy blue patches.

The skirt is shorter now ans simpler. I like it a lot now. The one navy blue patch is interesting and cute.

Do you have any ideas for this jacket? I can't think of a refashion idea for this one. Let me know in the comments.

A bientôt, bisous

New cardigan for my daughter

Hey all! I feel so happy I've been able to keep up with the sewing mood, using my refashion pile too. This month (I am aiming for a monthly refashion at least!!!) I was able to turn a pullover from my husband into a new cardigan for my daughter. She was in need of a not so warm one, that fitted her properly (all the ones she had were getting too short).

To complete I used a scrap of wool knit I add in my stash. You can read all about it though, by clicking HERE

Battles with big dresses

In my full post I mentioned some of the very common themes in my refashions. On of them is my constant frustration of how oversized dresses were in the '80s. Can you believe this dress is a size 4?
Taking these flowing tops in on the sides leaves me with a whole other problem of the bodice being long and overlapping the waistline. I decided to try removing the top of the collar and kind of folding the front inwards.
I also lost a ton of sleeve length and hacked about 4" off the bottom. It was still a little loose-fitting, but I'm impatient and wanted to wear it. I added a wide belt to hold it up.
I always end up taking these pics at night and using a flash. This can lead to some unflattering shots, hence the filter to pretty it up.
After wearing it once, I actually ran it under the machine one more time taking it in from the back.

Refashioned Refashion

Hi guys!

I hope you are having a lovely Memorial Day Weekend, here in the USA. I'm taking the chance to be productive, but also try to have a little fun as well.

Here is a quick project I completed last week.

I've actually already refashioned this dress once before. It used to be a halterneck and I turned the ties into skinny straps. The top has just gotten too skimpy but I didn't want to throw it away!

So I lopped off the top and made a casing for some elastic.

And voila! A cute little above-the-knee skirt. Sorry Addie isn't showing her off but this actually didn't fit on her! Does this mean I am getting skinnier?!?!

Simple is my mantra these days!

Hugs,
~Illy

Kentucky Derby Hat

For this years Kentucky Derby I challenged myself by only using items from the $1 store!
DSCN1252
I was lucky enough to find a hat at the dollar store! What luck!
DSCN1253
I assembled my $1 goodies! I even found a toy horse!
DSCN1254
How appropriate is this adorable horse! However, I did have to paint him.
After I secured my horse I arranged the flowers around him in a beautiful arrangement!

I've had this maxi skirt for ages but never quite knew what to do with it....
I've seen some people wearing their maxi skirts as maxi dresses, which I thought was a pretty good idea.
So, with that being said I give you a re-purposed maxi skirt into a dress!

Happy Derby!

MIx and Match Tunic

Hi guys,

Here is another tunic : out-of-the-box pattern matching.

I started with three somewhat ugly skirts:

Very flimsy, crinkly extra thin fabric. (But a LOT of it !)

A thicker coton-y fabric with paisley-lace motif

Rayon with bold motifs.  Not exactly this one but similar.

And here is what I came up with:

Raglan fluttery sleeves, hi-lo bottom, pockets.   I LOVE this pattern and the weird use of different motifs.  I also like the bold fuchsia !

Here it is on me !

Make a Boho Swing Tank Top from a Skirt and Scarf

I fell in love with the ikat scarf I found at the thrift store for $1.  I don't really wear scarves, so I combined it with a denim skirt to make a boho swing tank top.

I cut the yoke from the scarf.

Then I attached it to the skirt.

After sewing the shoulder and side seams, I finished the neckline and armholes with bias tape.

Don’t you love the way the bodice drapes?

This flowing top is perfect for hot summer days.  For a step by step tutorial on how to refashion a skirt and scarf into a boho swing tank top, check out my blog www.trevorlovesmommy.com

Metallic Thread Accent Shirt

This one's super easy, guys and gals. I bought this shirt brand spankin' new (something I've not done in a while...). Loved it in the dressing room but then immediately had buyer's remorse when I wore it out. Am I the only one that happens to?

Anyhoo, I figured out it was the sleeves that annoyed me. So I simply shortened them and used Gold Metallic thread to "go" with the pretty gold zipper.

Much better, right? :)

Click here for my full tutorial up now on the blog.

Keep it simple.

Pajama Shorts (With a Fun Print)

Hello Refashion Co-op. I found this big unflattering jacket at a thrift store. I wasn't sure what to do with it at first.

I loved the print so much. It was unusual and unique. It had a cute Asian theme. Look at this little guy. Doesn't the child and the dog remind you of the baby from the Coppertone sunscreen logo?

I had just enough fabric to work with this pattern to make some pajama shorts. The bottom of the jacket became the bottom of the shorts. That saved a lot of time. I used a basic casing with elastic inside as the waistband.

This is what I wore last night to sleep. Sweet Dreams.
(HAHA, I have a toddler and a dog. I was up.)
