Another Cold Shoulder Refash

I was lucky enough to find this Liz Claiborne sweatshirt for $1! I love it's bright blue color! I played around with possibly embroidering something on the front but I decided I really liked this sweatshirt plain Jane.

I decided on making a cut-out in the shoulder area to make a cold shoulder shirt.

I pinned a pattern I had back from a refashion I did where I added elbow patches to a sweater. Never throw away a pattern!
My tailor's chalk wouldn't show up on this fabric. So, I took my sharpest smallest pair of scissors and carefully cut inside the oval pattern.

DSCN1928I did not want to leave the raw edges to fray. I found a matching bias tape and carefully stitched it around the edge of the ovals. This proved to be a very complicated task. I think maybe the bias tape I had may have been too small of a size. Either way, it turned out pretty well.

Yay! It's back! Open Casting Call for Refashion Runway Season Five

Refashion Runway: Season Five!
I hope some of you talented upcyclers will apply to become a contender.
All of the creativity and talent brought by all of the contestants of the first four seasons was so impressive. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Refashion Runway Season Five will bring.
Check out this Season Five trailer:

To keep up on all of the festivities, be one of the first to subscribe to my new Youtube channel: The Renegade Seamstress
Here’s how it’ll work:
Much like Project Runway and The Great British Sewing Bee, we’ll choose eight refashion seamstresses (or seamsters) to compete in weekly challenges. The contestants will send in before and after videos or photos. The refashions will then be scored by judges and open to a popular vote. The scores will be combined to find a weekly winner and one competitor will be out (not without a prize for participating though). At the end of the series, whoever is left will not only receive a nice prize but will be crowned the winner of Refashion Runway Season Five!!
It’s such a great way to meet new people who love to do the same thing we do.
Can't wait to see what you have in store for us!
Happy Sewing!

Christmas Jumper Day - or Ugly Sweater Day*

(*depending on which part of the world you live in!)

I've spent a bit of time customising one of Rod's jackets (my little dog) - and also making my own jumper, with his face on (yes, I am that sad!). Hey, it's sustainable fashion - we'll both get lots of wear out of them!

His is a simple script, 'written' on the sewing machine, in a zigzag stitch...using a 'stencil' I printed off,

and mine pays homage to my boy..!

You can find all the details on my blog - it's part of my new YouTube series, Gema's 12 Days of Thriftmas, which was a joy to make!

Here's to a Wonderful Christmas!

Love and Hugs,

Gema, and Rod x

Dressember 2019; Dress 3

Hello Refashion Co-op. I put together another dress in honor of Dressember. They are an organization that works to fight human trafficking and modern day slavery around the world. Click the link to learn more about them and what they do.

This dress was an easy combination made of a short sweater and a loose shirt.

I cut the shoulders and sleeves off the floral shirt. It was an A-line shape that made a great skirt.

I stitched the sweater and shirt together and I was done. I had a dress.

It was soft and cozy. Perfect!

This Refash Is a Splash

I know Sea World has been under a lot of fire lately but growing up in Michigan close to Ohio going to Sea World was the thing to do. Sea World in Ohio has been closed for many many years but I found this Dolphin tee from Sea World, I got super excited!

You can't tell from the picture but the front of this shirt has rhinestones on it!

DSCN1889
Okay, this is going to be a simple refash because I already like this as a shirt. I took in the sides to make it more form fitted.

DSCN1901
I cut a slit up the front, a little off center, then stitched up each side with a new hem.

DSCN1902
This way I can tie the shirt and give it a new look!

Reupholstered boots

Lately it seems my favorite things to refashion have been shoes (not surprising—my favorite things in general are shoes!).

Most recently, it was a pair of winter white boots that had turned slightly scruffy after 6 years of being well loved.

With some glue and a tiny bit of stitchcraft, I gave them new life by covering them with a fresh outer layer of vaguely floral chiffon (that was part of a previous refashion itself!).

Look closely to see the flaking pleather!

Dressember 2019; Dress 2

Hello Refashion Co-op. This is the second dress in a series in honor of Dressember. It is a month long event to fight human trafficking.

This denim dress was not working for me. The eyelet lace and ribbon seemed a little like pajamas. Maybe too cute? I didn't like this dress but I did like the buttons down the back.

I cut off the lace, ribbon and the whole midsection with the pockets.

I put the dress back together with the skirt reversed so those buttons were in the front. This seemed like a more simple dress that I could wear with anything. That is great because I have to wear dresses (Or ties.) all month.

Dressember 2019; Dress 1

Hello Refashion Co-op. All this month I am refashioning dresses in honor of Dressember. It is an organization that works to fight human trafficking around the world. There is a style challenge every December. You have to wear a dress or tie everyday. Even in the cold weather.
This is the first dress refashion of the month. This denim dress did not flatter me. It was way too long and it was shapeless. It did seem to have potential.

I shortened it and took it in on the sides a little. I took it in a little too much though. It was a mistake but I am so glad I did! When I tried it on in front of a mirror I loved how it looked as a long vest.

My new vest seemed more unique and interesting than a dress and layers are great in the cold winter weather.
