Striped Blazer Refashion

Greetings Refashioners!
I found this striped turtleneck top, and thought it would make for a great refashion. I had no idea what I wanted to do with it.

After thinking (which I do every morning on the metro, and people watching to see what other people are wearing to get inspiration) and I decided to turn it into a blazer. I had an old grey blazer that I could take from.

I cut off the turtleneck, cut off the lapel from the blazer, removed the side vents, removed part of the bottom, debulked the sleeves and put it all together to make myself a new striped blazer. Just in time for fall!

Help!

I've got a major headache right now which makes it difficult to make a decision on a project I'm working on. I bought these boots on deep clearance at Urban Outfitters...

Canvas and suede combo olive green and a little basic...boring. So I decided to do something about it and sewed on this lace to one side of the first boot.

I like this, but I'm not sure if I like it enough...here are a couple of other thoughts I was having.

A leaf print polyester from one of my first refashions ever or another lace that is white and has a smaller pattern...I'm just not sure! I also have thoughts of metallic fabric paints or glitter instead of these first options. I just need some help deciding! Now that I'm thinking about it I'm leaning more towards a gold glitter to match the hardware on these boots, but I still want your thoughts on which direction to take :) I appreciate any ideas you might have and will post a follow-up once I've been able to decide! Thanks in advance fellow refashioners :)

Peace,
Andrea

Conference bag #3

Free conference bag from my hubby:
WP_20130616_001

It is eco friendly (fabulous) but not strong or sturdy and CERTAINLY not cute.  There are no pockets, which is just silly.  Looking through my bookshelf of fabrics, I pulled out a gorgeously thick purple fabric that I had bought on a whim when it was super duper ooper on sale at Joann's Fabric store.
I sewed a two layered "slipcover" that slid over the canvas bag, and added an additional 5 pockets in the process.  Whoa, right?   There was no math used in this project, just a lot of eyeballing it methods.
The turquoise fabric flower was Pin-spired from my "Sew Amazing" board.

Simplest Re-fashion Ever!

This is the simplest re-fashion I have ever done, this brown chevron print dress was originally an Adult Tunic bought for $2 at a Vintage fair (pretty certain though that this piece is not actually vintage!). Put it on my 6 year old daughter, and voila, its refashioned as a cute maxi dress.

With summer coming up down here in Oz, I couldn't stop there though, as it's such a lovely design and my daughter loves it. I just had to make one myself, so I refashioned the design into my own pattern. Using some of my knit offcuts, my daughter now has another maxi-dress and I suspect it won't be her last.

The funny thing about this because I used proper pattern paper for my pattern, creating the pattern cost more than both of these dresses!

Orange Who? At least it's not all Pink and Blue

Stripey Sleeve Swaps

The cold weather has arrived bringing with it the need to pack away spring/summer gear & bring out the fall/winter threads…and discover some fabulous forgotten bits of awesome in the process!

Buried within a box o’ sweaters were 2 identical never worn husband cardigans, I quickly snatched them up & created 4 completely different items for meself!

I transformed the bodacious blue into...

a groovy new top & over-sized cardigan (get the tute here)

and the rockin' red became...

a fabulous bolero & button-down turtleneck! (step-by-step how-to here)

iPad cover from scraps

I made this iPad cover from recycled cardboard from a box and some scraps of fabric from other refashions.

I'm a science teacher, and was disappointed I couldn't find anything in that theme in a shop bought cover.
Hopefully, it meets the criteria of being an accessory!

MFAM Week 2: Walk Like an Egyptian

MFAM header copy

Week two of the My Favorite Art Museum series is here, and it's time to revisit everybody's favorite period in history - ancient Egypt. Admit it, it was one of your favorite subjects growing up. With the hidden treasure, mummies, and mystery, how could it not be?

This week's project comes in the form of a $1 skirt (that's so tight I can't even zip it up) and a $4 pair of pants that are made for a woman with hips far more impressive than mine. I found the Egyptian print skirt a few months ago, and it is actually the inspiration for the MFAM series.

before 3 copyLet's get this party started!

Between the too-tight skirt and the too-loose pants, it was pretty hard to rock out to The Bangles. Obviously, something had to be done.

I started with the skirt. The cut wasn't really my style, so I decided to turn it into an infinity scarf. To do this I removed the zipper and unpicked the long seam down the back.

1Seams ripped!

Then I deconstructed and reconstructed the skirt panels, adding a panel of black cotton fabric to one end of the Egyptian print fabric to make it long enough, and finished the scarf-making.

5Finishing up.

Then I took in the pants.

pants copyTaking them in.

To complete the look, I skipped accessories and stuck to the basics instead - a black t-shirt and sandals.

This week's refashion was fairly simple (and had decidedly fewer mess ups) compared to last week's Old West refashion.

For a complete rundown on this refashion - including the full how-to for making the scarf, skinnying up the pants, information about the artifacts that inspired this project, and my brief encounter with an Egyptian noblewoman - check out the post on my blog.

Don’t forget to tune in next week for the next MFAM installment, and remember, please don’t touch the art.

Beefing up my fall/winter wardrobe

Well, here in New Jersey, fall is in full swing and I. am. loving. it!!! I wanted to freshen up some perfectly good pairs of jeans by dyeing and bleach tie dyeing them, so I went about doing just that.

These were both boot cuts that I'd skinnified, but I have given up wearing anything white on my bottom half with a sticky fingered young child and the blue jeans were just surplus. To tie dye the blue jeans, I got them wet, mixed equal parts of bleach and water in a bucket, wrapped the jeans all up with rubber bands and submerged them in the mix. I took them out after a couple of hours, rinsed them then rewrapped and added them and more bleach to the mix to create a third layer of color. I love how they turned out and even my husband liked them which surprised me a little. But they do look modern and I think, very cool ;)

The white jeans got tossed into a dye bath with red and black dye mixed with hot water and salt...I was going for a much deeper color, so I'm not totally satisfied with how they came out. I plan on buying a red wine colored dye or maybe plum to give these a deeper hue. However, for the meantime, I will totally rock these!!!

A quick refashion on this jacket I found today at the half price sale in my local thrift store was all it needed to make it more modern, and for $6, I'm thrilled!

Before, the collar made it feel a little dated, and I am much more into a round collarless (what is this called?) neckline when it comes to leather jackets. I love the pale gray, and now without that collar, it is a perfect fall jacket! All I had to do was seam pick it off and then sew the new neckline closed...easy peasy and for me, it makes all the difference :)

I love that these refashions really needed very little sewing or major reworking...dye, bleach and a quick collar change and I've just added some cute, modern, on trend clothing to my wardrobe! Hope you like these and are enjoying your new season, weather you are transitioning into fall or spring/summer...enjoy!!!

Peace,
Andrea
