Bleach Dye... Underthings (NSFW?)

Hello Co OP!

Today's post is a no-sew, iPhone recorded number from the beautiful land of Utah! We've been here for 3 weeks and I LOVE it! But, as moving goes, things are still chaotic, so I don't have a sewing desk and my machines are still in boxes :( But I'm hoping to get another desk soon (c'mooon payday!) so that I can get my machines up and running again!

Underthings! Avert your eyes! Seriously though; I was folding these hum-drum-drawers the other day and suddenly, out of NOWHERE, bleach dye popped into my head!

I have never done this before, so I took the undies, and bunched them up as you would for tie dye

I very carefully made a bleach and water solution and let them soak for... About an hour? I wasn't really timing it. I was just looking for a change in color.

Annndd this pic is sideways. SIGH! But I undid them, washed them in hot soapy water, then washed and dried in the machine. The pink and blue turned out pretty cool! The grey ones literally did not change at all LOL.

There you have it! Has anyone done bleach dye before? Do you have any tips? I know bleaching too hard will ruin the fabric of things.

Back at you with a real project soon :)

Dish Towel Refashion

Dish Towel Refashion

Honestly i'm not even sure if this counts as a refashion or not.  I needed to make a bunch of apron in a hurry so I made One Size Fits All aprons from flour sack towels.

I needed something that would fit both kids and adults.  A little twill tape and dish towels got the job done!

The best part is that because these towels come in all different colors I was able to make a bit lot of them quickly.

Adult size 18-women's
Kids sizes 10 & 14
These aprons are all the same size!

The Red Romper

Hello Refashion Co-op. I thought this was a simple shapeless knit tunic or mini-dress, until I put it on.

It felt weird and bulky. There were shorts under there. (It is too hot for double layers.)I changed my dress refashion idea into a romper idea.

I used the waist seam as a guide to cut off the skirt. It's a knit, so there was no fraying to worry about. I used thin elastic to draw the waist in a little. I just attached the elastic to the waist seam on the inside.
I probably didn't need the elastic because I cut the bottom edge off the skirt piece and used it as a belt.

It is still soft and comfortable but it is less bulky around the hips now. Perfect summer wear.

Collared

I flipped this extra large skirt to a dress this week

I added an old leather collar from my scrap fabric to the waistline to create a halter top.

Voila!

It's on my blog!

Simple Summer Shorts

Hello Refashion Co-op. I am living in a hot humid heatwave. It is hotter than hot. It's like a sauna out there. I decided I needed some denim shorts. I wanted to make some simple cuffed shorts from these jeans. But I messed up. I cut them way to short in one spot to make cuffs and one leg was REALLY short in the back. Like close to butt cheek exposure if I leaned down. That was not going to work for me.

I wanted to add some length so I used this wide ribbon. I used the back pockets as a guide to add the ribbon. I measured and compared each side so each leg was even. I stitched the ribbon on and added some to the back pockets too.

You can see what I cut off the jeans here. You can see the cutting mistake I made in the picture below on the right. That was a big oops.

Here are my new shorts in the sun. Apologies for the blindingly white legs. Some people just don't/can't/won't tan. Like ever.

High-Waisted Bikini

Before

After

I liked this swimsuit as a one-piece, but it was weirdly short on me. It had a sort of retro look to it, so I thought it would be a good candidate for turning into a high-wasted bikini. Over most of the course of spring and summer, I was working intermittently on this very frustrating project, making many mistakes along the way. I had no idea that sewing elastic fabric could be so hard!

I post the finished product here for 2 reasons: 1) It looks OK in pictures, so I can at least pretend it was a success, and 2) to beg for help! Fellow refashioners, what are your tips for sewing elastic? No matter what I tried (and you can see all the gory details in my full blog post), all I ended up with was a stretched-out, puckery mess! It seems inevitable that I'm going to disassemble the whole project and try again, so I could certainly use suggestions as to how to do it better next time.

Eternal thanks,

Tweaked Trenchcoat

I was absolutely thrilled when an acquaintance gave me this coat. I have wanted this exact style for so long, but haven't been able to find one in thriftstores.
Not it might not look like something to be thrilled about, but it just needed a few minor alterations: Minus 5 cm (2") in coat length and minus 4 cm in sleeves length.

First I removed the sleeve cuffs. Well, first I scoured the entire city to find the exact and very elusive just right nuance of greige thread. But then I got to it.
The sleeves had pleats by the cuffs. In order to preserve them in the easiest way possible, I pinned them down  and stitched across the pleats, and now I could cut the excess fabric and the pleats remained (more photos on my blog: Trenchcoat ).

I attached the cuffs again. Then I shortened the length of the coat, including the lining. I tried to make the seams look like the original ones, and think I succeded fairly well.

Now it fits me just right. A great coat for our everchanging summer weather.
New shoes!

P.S. No, I didn't take it in at the sides. It already fit fine at the torso, but the overwhelming amount of fabric in the original coat obscured that.

Retro Fancy Thing

Funny story...I refashioned this dress last summer. I even got pictures of it when I wore it to summer school last July. I'm just now posting it. I do things on my own time. (Also, I'm a flake.)
It's a shiny, polyester, '80s dress with a great retro print. Here's a closeup of the weird matching belt that intrigued me.
Sorry, photography is hard. See, it's got a triangular shape? I was able to use the belt with the finished product. I looked at my year-old pictures and realized that as far as accessorizing; mistakes were made. I do stand by my choice to do this:
 Missing picture!
Ok, that's lame, that one picture won't upload. It's a closeup of the clip on earrings I added to the dress. Let's just move on to the "after" pics:

Daddy's Girl Shirt!

We're Baaaaaaaaaaack!!!

And there was teeny tiny reason why we disappeared.  But now we're back and refashioning for a cute little baby girl!

We started with Daddy's cast off button up shirt:

And ended up with a darling dress for baby girl!

The original elements we kept from Daddy's button up were the pocket, button placket, sleeve hems, and back hem.

Hop on over to Skirt Fixation for a full review and to see the cute squish herself modeling the dress!

Faux Embroidery Refashion

I whipped up this refashion just in time for summer. Lately, I've been seeing a lot of embroidered blouses this summer and I wanted to create my own. I had this embroidered blouse in my closet that I got in Mexico about 10 years ago. I wanted to update the style to make it trendier. Recently, I had bought some fabric markers and hadn't put them to use. I realized I could create my own "faux embroidery" with them.

After I drew on my embroidered design, I cut some length off, added some elastic, and to finish it off I sewed on some pom pom trim.

The Goonies Shirt

Hello Refashion Co-op. I was given this red T-shirt recently. Do you remember" The Goonies"? It was a movie from the 80's. A group of outrageous kids go on a treasure hunt. I couldn't recall the plot in detail but I remembered liking it.

The shirt was very big on me so I needed to alter it.

I used a shirt I liked as a guide. I liked the fit of the white shirt and I really liked the round hem at the bottom. I figured I could copy the white shirt. I traced it and then used my machine to stitch the sides and arms back together.

The shirt fit well and it was perfect to do some research into this old movie.
