The Plaid Skirt Dress

Hello Refashion Co-op. I saw a refashion by Sarah Tyau recently that I really loved. She made her dress from a plaid coat. When I saw it I knew what I wanted to do with this plaid skirt. Big thanks to her for the inspiration.

I cut out my simple skirt. I really wanted to keep that buckle at the waist.

I cut the bottom of the skirt off so I could use the fringe on my shoulder straps.

I used the extra fabric to make the front bib and a pocket. I stitched the straps to the front bib. I used Velcro to connect the bib to the skirt so I could wear the skirt alone if I wanted to.

I was happy with how the dress turned out and I like the versatility of wearing the straps or not.

Quick & Easy Skirt Refashion

Thanksgiving week was full of busy activities and honestly I am still resting from all of the hustle and bustle. I can't complain though, because I love being surrounded by family. (Even if it keeps me away from my sewing machine!) To get my sewing groove back, I went for a quick and easy refashion. This skirt has been in my refashion pile for ages and it finally made its way out of it, and into my personal closet. The thrift store is a great place to find skirts to refashion.

This refashion was so easy! I just cut off a piece from the top part of the skirt (to preserve the hem that was already present) and added some elastic.

Men's Henley to Women's Tunic

After doing a quick alteration to my daughter's dress, I combined a men's henley with the leftover embroidered scrap to create a fun and comfortable tunic.

More details of how this was put together on my blog, Second Chances by Susan!

The Bathrobe Sweater

Hello Refashion Co-op. How are things with you? I am preparing for my favorite holiday of the year, Thanksgiving. It has all those good things like family, friends, food, fun...

But back to the sewing. This long sweater looked like a bathrobe on me. I know long sweaters are in style and they look really cool if you are not super short. I didn't think it looked cool or chic, it looked long and robe-like. It was too thin and clingy to make a dress, it makes me look really lumpy.

I did some quick alterations and made a tunic length sweater. I made the sleeves shorter and the over all length much shorter too.

It was a nice layering piece. When it was worn open it was light and flowy, not lumpy and clingy.

Thanks for reading along, and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the U.S.
If you aren't in the U.S. I wish you a very happy day too.

The Boring Pink Sweater

Hello Refashion Co-op. I had a super soft but very boring pink sweater on my hands. I decided to try to dress it up.

I used these cotton pajama pants to jazz up the sweater. These pants were supposed to be a cropped capri length but on me they just look like they were too short pants.

I cut the waistband off the pants and I cut strips of fabric from the legs of the pants. I added a long vertical piece to each side of the sweater.

 Horizontal pieces.               Vertical pieces.

I  connected some horizontal pieces and made pleats.

I added the pleated fabric to the waistband of the sweater.

I added the waistband of the pants to the wrists of the sweater.

I think the striped fabric added a little fun color to the sides, wrists, and waistband of the pink sweater.

Tunique bicolore

Coucou !

Bisous,

The Pajama Skirt

Hello Refashion Co-op. I found a great pair of colorful pajamas recently and I wanted to make them into a dressy outfit to wear in public.

These pajamas looked a lot like silk but they weren't. They were polyester. I would have kept them as pajamas if they were real silk. Polyester doesn't breath or feel as comfy as to sleep in as silk.

The pants were very loose and baggy. I planned to use them to make a skirt. The drawstring waistband would work in a skirt.

I cut open the inseams and spread out the material.

I made a basic skirt shape. I just had to remove the fabric that made up the crotch.

It was too long on me so I gave it a big cut and a new hem to about knee length.

I made the shirt a bit smaller but I didn't alter it, I liked it as it was.

I liked how the outfit turned out. I liked the shirt untucked the best but I could tuck it in too.

Halloween Refash 2018

It has arrived! (and passed) The most fun day for a refashioner, Halloween!!!
This year I have decided to be a sassy witch!

DSCN1688.JPG
I purchased this witch dress from the Halloween store and as you can see it does not have a very sassy fit. It just hangs on me. Thank goodness I will use this as a starter for my costume because after all this is a refashion!

DSCN1690
I purchased 3 spools of Halloween tulle: Orange glitter tulle, green spiderweb tulle, regular purple tulle and black bat ribbon. I cut these into strips and added them in between the fabric strips of the witch dress.

DSCN1694
Once the strips of Halloween tulle were pinned, it was time to start sewing!
Now onto making the top part of the dress....

DSCN1689
I had this corset in my to-be refashed pile. So glad I had this in stock!

IMG_1658
Since I was going with mostly black and purple for my costume I used a purple fabric marker to color the white threads of the appliques on the corset.
What witches costume isn't complete with accessories?!
First up: Shoes!

DSCN1691
\Thrifted these beautiful pointed black heels!

DSCN1695
I wanted to put some glitz on these babies! I painted the shoes with modge podge, sprinkled on black glitter for the shoe and purple glitter for the heel. Once this coat was dry I then painted on another coat of modge podge to seal the glitter! (It is best to paint and glitter in small sections and use a foam brush!)

DSCN1693
All dry and sparkly!

I then cut 2 square buckles out of a cereal box. Painted black with acrylic paint and sprinkled with purple glitter while the paint was still wet. Once that dried I sealed with a coat of modge podge. Then I hot glued them to my witch shoes.
Don't worry! I didn't forget about the hat!

IMG_1687
My favorite part of refashioning is doing hats! On this on I added a series of feathers and a black rose.

IMG_1688
To top it off I added a plastic spider attached with fishing line to the tip of my hat.

The hubby always insists on buying this costumes at the Halloween store. This year he decided to be Dr. Steven Strange. Who my hubby's name is also Steven.

I do believe he has a great likeness!
