My Accidental Waitress Costume

When I first purchased Colette's Penny pattern, I had grand plans of making a classic shirt dress.  I had the perfect fabric - a thrifted, striped bed sheet and a white, button down for the cuffs and collars.
Unfortunately, the dress started to look like a 50's waitress costume.  Instead of tossing it, I decided to embrace the dress as a costume and made a matching apron to finish the look.

Mommy's Not Really Getting Dressed Today

Hello Refashion Co-op. I admit I am one of those moms that doesn't have it together all the time. I usually go to sleep in leggings and a T-shirt so that I am sort of dressed in the morning. I have a 2 year old and I don't know how or when my day will start. I like to be dressed enough to exercise or go to the playground or whatever.

I had a great shirt and hoodie to add to my "athleisure" wardrobe but they were too long in the arms. (My arms are really short in comparison to the standard off the rack clothes.)

I wanted to have nice cuffs on the shirt sleeves so I marked where I needed a new seam.

I did my sewing and cut off the excess.

The new length was good and looked like a normal sleeve. Yeah!

I fixed the jacket using the same method. It was quick and easy and I was ready to go out for a walk.

Maxi Skirt Refash

I can't tell you how excited I am to share this refashion with you guys! Although, I cannot take all of the creative credit for this one. I owe it all to Jilian Owens over at refashionista.net She is where I got the inspiration for this one!
For this refash I went back to my Kentucky Derby post....
DSCN1256Remember me?
I re-purposed a maxi skirt into a strapless maxi dress! This was a no sew refash but not I am using it for a Sew Refash! It's a twofer!DSCN1260
I just can't get enough of this chevron pattern!

DSCN1301
I began this refash by cutting off 5 inches off the length to make a short dress.
DSCN1302
Whelp, I figured that I didn't cut enough and went in for another chop!
And then of course I cut too much at the second attempt which made my new dress into a long shirt. Oh well, not a huge mistake.DSCN1305
I used the thickest scrap I cut from the bottom of the dress and sewed  2 new hems (on the top and bottom).
I then pinned the ends of the scrap to each side of the front of my shirt. This created the scrap to drape across my shoulders. The Refashionista called this a cowl but I think it is more of a reverse cowl. Either way, it turned out super cool!

Even though I hoped this would be a dress I am happy with it as a long shirt!

Wonderful Vintage Fur

It's been a while again. How's everyone doing? I have been low on refashions, but I have this cool one I have been wanting to show you for a few weeks, but I just couldn't do it before.

You see, when I was a baby, my father was working in Germany (we live in Portugal) and when he was back, he brought my mom, this amazing fur coat. She might have wore it once or twice though, and a few years ago she finally thought about getting rid of it. She wasn't wearing it at all, but it was one of those things we hold on to.

She gave it to me as she does with all her unwanted clothes. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it since the start, but I too was too sentimental to cut it apart, and I kept postponing it until a couple of weeks ago when I signed for a blog tour and one of the sponsors had this fur vest I could use.

I signed and sighed... there's no going back, I had to cut it. And I did, and it became a new vest for my daughter. I used only the sleeves, and kept the rest, it will make a wonderful vest for me and it's life will be extended for many years - hopefully.

Here's my daughter wearing hers. You can read more about it HERE

Embroidered Mexican Dress to Cute Top

I was given this pretty, green, Mexican dress with beautiful embroidery. The dress was a bit too potato sack size for me, so I decided to take try and turn it into a blouse instead.

I cut the dress into three sections. The top and bottom I used for this project and the middle I saved for who knows what ;).

First, I serged the raw edges of the top and bottom pieces.

I folded under the serged edge of the top piece to finish the hem because it will lay over the bottom piece and be exposed.

I then sewed the top and bottom pieces together overlapping the two to create a casing for elastic to run through, so it will cinch up around the waist.

Here is the finished product:

The top is a little tight across the chest, as was the dress. I think if I were a little less broad across the chest it would fit great.  I don't know that this is totally my style or that it will get much wear, but I had fun tinkering with it. I really need to start selling some of the pieces I make because I really can't wear them all. Something I may have to try out on Etsy soon!

Westside Sew

I refashioned this same top last week when I was in sunny Eastern Washington.

This week I flipped it upside down to layer up for the fall.

Come check it out on my blog!

Too Low, Too Big

Hello Refashion Co-op. Autumn is on the calendar but the cool weather isn't here yet. It is very hot in the Washington D.C. area. Summer weather is still in control here. This outfit was great for a mom like me on a hot day.

The shirt had an open neckline that was too low and revealing on me. It was too hot for a cami or a tank top under it so I had to fix it.

I just stitched it closed. Problem solved.

I also had this nice knit skirt that was too baggy. I liked it but the fit was really bad. I over-brightened the photo so it would be easier to see.

I took a little fabric off each side and had a better fitting skirt without changing the style at all.

The skirt was great in the heat and the knit fabric is great for a mom chasing a toddler.

Cute slip into a top

A slip that I am sure is from the 70es. It was really cute. Way too cute to wear hidden away under clothes. But wasn't quite suitable to be a dress either.
Worn with a skirt since it is somewhat seethrough
At first I believed the slip was homemade, but it had a tag: "Pussycat" in a groovy font.

I measured the circumference of the upper part of the slip, and how long I wanted the lower part to be, and then cut that amount out of the lower part of the slip. And stitched it to the upper part.

Now I can show the garment off as fashion wear, not underwear.

Striped Tank Refash

Recently I have been motivated to forage through my "to refash" pile. When I did I came across this awesome tank. I LOVE the little pocket!
DSCN1320
This tank only needed a few nips and tucks.

DSCN1321
I snipped the shoulders at the seams to make the straps shorten.
I also took in the sides about 1/2 inch. Not too much but just a little.

The hubby too me out for some BBQ! yummm!

I just love the length of this tank!
