Halloween Refashion Repurposing Unfashionable Material!

This is an old "refashion" I made a couple years back. I wanted to share it because its a Halloween refashion and it is an example of what you can fashion out of old unfashionable material!

I made this bacon and eggs costume using old upholstery material, foam material and some felt I had leftover from my past burlesque and performance costumes. When I originally made it I stapled it all together. Since I know how to sew now I went back over it with my sewing machine. Its still a little rough looking but its a Halloween costume after all! Here are some pics of what I did:

I started with this.

I simply cut out the shapes of bacon and an egg. Then I made some shoulder straps for the bacon so I can hang it over my shoulders. I also cut out some holes for the arms in the front of the egg costume. I used glue to attach the yolk and the bacon fat.

The staples were falling out so I sewed the egg back together:

I did the same for the straps on the bacon.

It was easy and cost me nothing since this is old material I had laying around that would never get used for anything else.

Thats me modeling both costumes. My husband will be the egg!

Black Angora Skirt Fail

Hey everyone! Remember my awesome Black Angora No Sew Refashion from a couple weeks ago? Let me refresh your memory :)

Well... I still had the bottom scrap left over and I decided to make a skirt. I gave it some shape with a couple of cuts, made a casing for elastic, and voila!

While the Angora skirt turned out fine... I didn't like the "pencil" shape of it on me. I'm a little too hippy to wear anything but "A-Line" fits.  These after pics are of another black skirt refashion I did last Summer. If you want to see the pics of my thunder thighs in the Angora skirt (that I designated as a 'Fail' on my blog) click here.

Happy Refashioning! ...and remember to keep it real :)

Stamped-on moth costume

I needed a costume and decided to go as a moth. Such a guy.
But a moth that someone has stamped on.

Part 1 - Upper body.
Black T-shirt, white textile paint, winter boots.

I used the boots a stamp.

And cut in the T-shirt to make it look destroyed.

Part 2 - Eyes and antennaes
Hair band, pipe cleaners, and a tennis ball cut in two.

I painted the tennis ball parts black and sewed them to the hairband (= eyes). I attached the pipe cleaners to the hairband (= antennaes). One crumpled up.

Part 3 - Wings
Chiffon from this dress and a few meters of fence wire.

I cut the chiffon moth-wing-shaped, made a casing along the uper edge and pulled the fence wire through. A loop of the fence wire is attached to my bra (which turned out to be a just fine rest for the wings). I did that with both wings.

A bandage on one arm, black pencil skirt, grey patterned tights, and black boots.

Back-combed hair because moths have fluffy heads. Grey and black makeup.

So large !!! Ep 1

DIY TUTORIAL FABRIC DYE

I have this skirt many years, it fits me perfectly and there is really nothing wrong with it, but all those years made it extremely boring for me, I first thought  to shorten it but this length and cut in front make it looks very sexy in my opinion.
I find  ,very new for me idea, how to change clothes without cutting and sewing and it's dyeing!

Love,

My DIY Refashionista Costume

Even though Halloween as I know it is not at all celebrated in Germany my refashionista brain still insists on coming up with loads of awesome costume ideas. Throughout the years I’ve managed to suppress my urge to put together a groovy get up that will never be worn but the other day inspiration whacked my head hard and I just had to create and share my quirky last minute costume idea:

A Before and After Refashionista Tutorial!

Here’s how to easily make your own diy diva salute from a thrifted maxidress...

T-shirt Fish Bag

A few years ago, my daughter wanted to be a cat for Halloween. She already had the costume, but I thought she needed a clever trick-or-treat bag. So I whipped up a fish bag made from old t-shirts I had.

She loved it!

Panty Fix

This might be a little strange but I decided to alter these cute little panties. When I bought these I thought they were cute but did not think about the comfort level of them. The back is a fish net stocking type of material and was not at all enjoyable to sit on all day. I didn’t want to toss a new pair of panties so I chose to update them. I also have never worked with elastic before and this was the perfect small project to start with.

First, I cut the front part from the back. Then I placed the back cut out part on a black t-shirt, which is far too small for me now, and cut around the outline. Next, I sewed the new cut out t-shirt part to the original front part. I wanted to keep the original elastic to match the rest so I cut that out of the back piece and sewed it onto the new t-shirt piece. Last, I sewed the sides together and done. They are still just as cute but much more wearable.

Pink Pinch Dress

I picked up a couple of dresses on an online super clearance. The price was right and they looked good in photos, but when they arrived, I realized that I had ended up getting a shapeless knit tent.

I didn't have to do much to fix this problem.

I brought in the sides at the top then created a waist by adding pinch-type pleats on each side, in the back and then two in the front. This shaped the skirt much better and gave it some movement.

Then I cut off the long sleeves to make them 3/4.

My (dark) after photo is following a long day at work, I styled my refashioned dress for the office with all black accessories - tights, belt, cardigan and a chunky black necklace.

You can read more details on the process on my blog, ProbablyRachel.com.

Re-sizing A Man's T-shirt And A Skirt To Go With It

Hello Refashion Co-op. Tuesday and Thursday are my sewing days. Today is a double project. a fitted T and a skirt. Both needed a little work to make them fit.

It started with some big men's T-shirts I was given. (Or acquired from a man close to me.) I used a shirt of mine to mark the new shirt for size and shape. I love working with T's, no fraying.

This skirt has a subtle pinstripe. I liked the material. It has a corporate business look. That isn't my style but I thought if I went shorter it would look more fun and less formal. It was too loose and needed a little re-sizing too.

That's it. Thank you for your time. If you want more info, check I Can Work With That. Now go make something fabulous for yourself.

Can you refashion tights?

I almost always wear dresses or skirts. Since Denmark do not have subtropic climate (yet) I (literally) work myself through a lot of tights. I wondered if I could refashion them, and had gathered a bunch of holey tights.

Googling and Pinteresting didn't help much with ideas. I mostly found ideas for using holey tights for something else than being tights. But I wanted to revive them. So I gave it a try at sewing in tights.

"You can't sew in tights. They will run". But a test showed that they don't.
- Wool, cotton and microfiber tights are best for refashion.
- They must be 40 denier or more.
- Old fashioned nylon stockings doesn't work for this, they do run.

Dr. Frankenstein went to it. I cut away the holey parts and went on to make new combinations. I liked overknee stockings when they first were in fashion back in the 90s, but didn't have the legs for them (knee bulges). So I adore the new mock overknee tights trend. I wanted to make such ones.

Here is the TUTORIAL for how to combine tights into new tights. Go get thrifty :-)

Black patterned waist and grey legs. Mock overknee.
'

Striped waist and green legs. Mock overknee.

Green waist, white legs. Mock overknee.
This pair might me more special than pretty. But they are fun.

Solid black waist (from a pair of leggins, that I never used), patterned black legs. Mock knee length.

Solid black waist, ribbed legs. Mock overknee/almost stocking length.

White waist, baby pink legs. Mock overknee. (Maybe for a japanese inspired costume, should I ever decided to do something like cosplay)

Solid black waist. Spiral striped legs. Mock overknee.

Solid black waist and striped legs. For one leg I only had a little piece that wasn't holey. I used one leggins leg to make the tight leg below that little piece.

So yes, you CAN refashion tights!

Halloween from household items!

I always loved Halloween, it was my favourite dressing up time for the kids. Most of the costumes I ever made for them were made simply, and from bits collected from around the house.

My daughter loved the film The Nightmare Before Christmas and one year for Halloween she wanted to be the lead lady, Sally! The hair is made from wool, glued and painted!

A pair of tights become a zombie intestine!

A black bin bag becomes a witches dress!
