Nirvana was the band of my youth and I can't help myself when I find a T-shirt that I can refashion. Previously, 2 Nirvana T-shirts became a pair of Harem pants and a Muscle Tee for my twins (for details please see Nirvana Muscle Shirt). When I saw this T-shirt being sold cheaply, I knew there was a dress to be made for my 6yo daughter.
For the perfect rock n' roll edge, I have some jersey fabric offcuts with a matte black vinyl look, that I can use. For T-dresses, I usually use a raglan design with a circle skirt but that would cut off some of the "Smiley" as it's very fitted, so my yoked A-line dress will be more suited. There is not much length to the T-shirt so I'll make the bottom band wider to compensate and provide a nice balance to the yoke. A triangular insert of the black jersey will be added to each side to ensure the dress is more movement.
So all my planning is now done - now to make the dress.
3 days later........
The dress is done and as you can see my daughter loves it! It took me longer than planned as the Tee fabric was really thin and it was hard to sew with the jersey. I topstitched all the seams with a twin needle so that the seam allowance laid against the jersey and, although you can't see it in the photos, it gave a nice almost quilted look to the seams. I've only just started using a twin needle (as summer is approaching, swimsuits were needed) and I am a convert, especially for knit fabric. It gives such a great professional look to my sewing, more than makes up for the pain of having to change needles!

Your daughter looks super cute in her new dress. :) I agree, twin needles give a great finish.
