Nursing Shirt Tutorial

When I was nursing my son I found that I really liked shirts with easy access, especially in the first few months when I felt like that's all I was doing. One day while in the store I found a sale shirt that would be a perfect refashion to a nursing shirt. It has elastic at the neck, so it can be pulled down. I even made a nursing shirt tutorial for you!

Men's Shirts Dress Refashion

I made a dress for myself out of not one men's shirt but three. I used one for the bodice and two for the skirt. I was able to keep two pockets in the front. I also added gathered sleeves with cuffs. It was really fun to keep as many of the original details as possible, so you could tell it was from a men's shirt.

I used one of the extra buttonhole plackets as the waistband.
I even wore this dress the night I got engaged! I loved having a new special dress for a special night. To see more check out my sewing blog.

Fish Scales Skirt

I found a great sweater skirt at the thrift store. I was going to wear it as it because I thought it was pretty cool, but my husband thought it looked "granny-ish." Instead of wearing it, I sewed strips of sheer fabric cut on the bias. I got the idea from No Big Dill's biased skirt tutorial. It took me FOREVER, but it was definitely worth it. I love this skirt.

It's a solid color with subtle texture, and it's very flattering. I probably won't do something like this again because of the time it took unless I'm very inspired.

Men's Button Up Shirt to Baby Romper

Aren't men's button up shirts great? There are so many things you can do with them, and I found another great way. I made a baby romper out of one! I used the original front button placket and the sleeve hems. It's fun to keep some of the original details! In the process of making this, I also drafted a pattern for my readers! Check out my sewing blog to get the free baby pattern and tutorial.

I love making little boy clothing and refashioned my husbands old sweater into some great sweater vest overalls for my son. Doesn't he look quite dashing?

Thrifted 60's Coat Refashion

I found a fantastic coat at the thrift store, but alas it was too big. I love the 60's a-line style, the color, and the big texture of the weave. I checked the construction and saw that it would be easy to alter. I ended up taking in 4" on each side, but I kept the a-line style because that's one of the things I fell in love with.
I love the 3/4 length sleeves. I can wear bright long sleeves for a fun accessory.
It's thick and warm, easily dressed up and easily dressed down. I'm pretty sure it's my new favorite coat.

I hope you stop by my blog to see other sewing DIY projects or read more about this coat refashion.

Ivory Sequin Dress Refashion

I was given a dress that was in the process of being let out and having panels added. It was in a sad state.

First, I took out the added panels, and then took in the sides and the back.

Then I added a box pleat to the front slit and added a pleated band to the bottom for a hem. To see how to add a box pleat to a slit, see my sewing tutorial.

It wasn't much work for a really pretty dress.

I wore it to a dance with my husband. I felt so snazzy! Here's a picture from the dance. Don't forget to see what else I'm up to on my sewing blog.

Simple Dress Refashion

I found a really great dress at a thrift store. It had really cool paneling on the bodice. The stripes switch perpendicularly back and forth on each diagonal panel. The problem was, it basically looked like this. (Sorry, I forgot to take a before picture.)

I chopped off the sleeves and made them into short gathered sleeves, and then altered the neckline with a new facing. Now its a great dress and looks so much better! It has enough detail to be worn as-is, but the detail is subtle enough to be pair with cool accessories.

Fit An Ill-Fitting Dress Tutorial

One of my favorite refashions is to make an ill-fitting dress fit. Most of the time when I find a cute, unique dress while thrifting, it doesn't fit me. I learned this technique while working at a tailor shop and have used it countless times!

If you'd like to learn this easy technique, head on over to see my step-by-step sewing tutorial.

Baby Pants From Pillowcase With Pacman Kneepads

Hello! This is my first post on Refashion Co-op, and I'm so excited to be apart of this fantastic community! I really love sewing, and it's even more satisfying when I can turn something unwanted into something new and fun. My name is Heather, and I go by Heather Feather over at Feathers Flights where I blog about sewing, tutorials, refashioning, and family. I started sewing in high school for fun and then went on to study clothing construction in college. I worked at a tailor shop to put get me through school, and it is where I learned all about clothing alterations and refashioning. I have a sweet baby with BIG blue eyes and a great husband. My husband is currently in law school, so I do lots of refashioning to save us money.

The first refashion I have to show you today is a fun little pair of pants for my son. I made some basic blue pants out of a pillowcase using the existing hem for the pants hem. Then I added some faux leather kneepads in Pacman shapes.
It's great for this busy little crawler.
The Pacman shapes are really basic and were easy to cut out.

If you want to see how I made these Pacman pants, check out my baby sewing tutorial.
