Mini Quilt - What I did...

Hello!!!  This is the process I followed for the mini quilt I posted about...
Cut the pieces....
Worked out the design...
Here it is pieced together and basted to a fleece inner and yummy Egyptian cotton backing. (Basting quilt sandwiches is a beast!!)...

I saw this trick ages ago on Martha Stewart's site and thought it was super clever. You run a strip of masking tape from corner to corner.....

Sew either side of it (I loooooove this walking foot!! Borrowed it from college. Really helps stop the layers moving about).....

Peel away the tape and hey presto...straighter and more even quilting lines than I could ever hope to achieve by eyeballing it....

Then lay a strip of tape along each of your newly stitched lines and repeat the process....

Keep repeating this step working your from the middle outwards.....

I then repeated the whole process crossways as well....

Trimmed the piece....

Quick shot of the back....erm...

Ooops! This quilting malarkey is trickier than it looks!

I used some of my thrifted bias binding for the edging...
along with some gorgeous toggles I found recently, and created loop ties from bias tape...

So that it can be rolled up.....

and fastened, ready to pop into baby's bag!!

Using leftovers...

I recently finished this mini quilt using leftover scraps from clothing refashions and bedlinens, finished with thrifted notions...

Using up my scraps

This week I have been making a few 'bag tags' using up left over fabric and felt scraps. Have you ever notice that kids get really frustrated trying to do and undo the zippers on their bags?Personally I have trouble finding which side the zipper is actually on.
My bag tags solve both problems. They are bright, easy to locate and hold. Best of all they are made from 100% recycled materials and scraps!

Who hearts scraps?!?

Yay! A FREE book! **Giveaway Now Closed**

Scraps to Doll

OK I don't know if you can classify this as a refashion...
But I did use scraps of fabric and yarns left over from other projects..
I hate to throw away scraps and I love to use them up :)
This was a fun way to do it!

If you want to know how I made it
You can read about it here.

Thanks for letting me share :)

'Around the World in 80 Dresses' challenge: prizes and rules

**NOW CLOSED**
I'm so excited about the 'Around the world in 80 dresses' challenge. I have my dress all ready to show you all and I have been thinking hard about what to giveaway as a prize for the draw.

If you want to know more about the challenge visit the 'Around the World in 80 Dresses' challenge page!

So far we have some wonderful prizes ready for you. The main one is the new ReSew book generously pledged by author Jenny Wilding Cardon.
The book has a wonderful collection of project ideas to make from thrift store find and I thought it would be perfect for all you refashionistas out there. I will shortly do a song and a dance about it (just to make Jenny giggle) and show you pictures of a couple of the dress related projects.

Here are some of the other giveaway prizes pledged so far by the Editors:
  • Deborah will put together a little stash package for one lucky person.
  • Erica is giving away a couple of lovely vintage sewing patterns.
  • I will be adding some lace edging/trimming and embellishments.
I will follow up on this later with some pictures and maybe another song and dance about each of the wonderfully generous giveaway prizes.

At this point I would like to ask all of you if you are interested in adding a little giveaway to the prize draw. Do you have a couple of patterns you know you will never use. A scrap of fabric that is just not your colour. Embellishments that just don't suit your style. Or maybe something you make and would like to share around. Why not pledge it as a prize and I will sing and dance (I'm gonna be hoarse and dizzy at the end of this) about you, your blog and your generous pledged prize.

So what, you might want to know, do I do if I want to win one of these prizes?
It will be like a raffle where you can get 1-3 tickets for each thing you do.
1 Ticket: Spreading the word - mention the challenge on twitter, facebook or your blog (adding a link to the challenge: http://refashionco-op.blogspot.com/p/around-world-in-80-dresses-challenge.html) - just add a comment to the challenge page. 1 comment about how you spread the word = 1 ticket.
2 Tickets: Posting a dress refashion on the Refashion Co-op. Use the 'dresses' and the 'challenge' labels to enter the refashion. You can do as many refashions as you want but the final item must be a dress - how you get there is up to you.
3 Tickets: Post a dress tutorial and use the 'dresses' and 'tutorials' labels to enter.

Take care,
Eddie

Refashion Co-op Valentines launch

I would like to start this launch post by saying thank you! Thank you to everyone who took an interest in this concept and especially thank you to the six women who signed up as editors.

I took the refashion pledge at Wardrobe Refashion (WR) last autumn and loved it mightily. The community spirit amongst refashioners was so warming and I was inspired by all the refashions they shared. However, it was all too soon over. In November Nikki posted that WR was going to close down. I was gutted and I didn't want to let go!

I had a long think about it, considering whether I would like to start something similar myself. But talking it over with my husband made me realise that it would just add too much work and stress to my life at the moment with all the other projects that were going on. So I started thinking about whether there was another way of recreating something like the WR community without me having to do all the work and take all the responsibility myself. One thing that came to me in all this was that if you want to share the work load with someone you also have to be willing to share the responsibility and of course the credit and I was more than willing to do both.

So I contacted fellow refashionista Erica, who I had already been chatting to on twitter, to see if she was interested in doing something together. She was very positive towards the idea but we decided at first to go together on interviewing some of the refashionistas we had met through WR. So the idea was shelved for a little bit. I did my first interview with Zoe and Erica did hers with Jillian. While interviewing Zoe we got to talking about the idea of having a refashion blog with several editors. Zoe encouraged me to go ahead with the idea and this inspired me to write the post 'Refashionista Co-operative idea" in January. This post was mainly aimed at anyone interested in being an editor in such a co-operative and Bryony, Debbie, Erica, Jenni, Jessica and Jillian contacted me saying that they were interested.

This all happened in the middle of January and now a month later we are ready to launch the blog. The time has now come for contributors to sign up to the Refashion Co-op. Over the next couple of weeks we will be signing up contributors and figuring out the rules for contributing. They won't be strict or inhibiting as we are well aware that the contributors are what is going to make this blog great. We will ask however, that everyone behaved nicely towards each other and encourages each other with comments and likes. This is where the editors come in again. As we are 7 editors at the moment, each editor will have one day a week where they are on shift. Editors will not change or do corrections to your posts. But they will read each post and comment to make sure everyone is playing nice.

The amount of editors on Refashion Co-op is the main strength of the blog. It means that each of us has the support of the other 6 and that we shouldn't be burned out by having to keep an eye on things each and every day. There may also come a day when one of the editors decide that they need to take a break from RC. If this is the case we can easily take on new editors, since no one editor owns the blog.

Finally, I would like to add a little something about the badge. You are most welcome to use it to link to the blog, whether you are a contributor or a reader/supporter. As neither of the editors are professional graphic designers we have decided to start out with one, simple but effective badge design. We are then hoping in the long run to have a competition for a makeover of the blog and the badge. But for now we hope you will make good use of this one.

All there is left to do is to introduce the editors: Bryony, Debbie, Erica, Jenni, Jessica, Jillian and myself, Eddie. Please go to the editors page and read more about us. We each have our own blogs and write about a lot of exciting things beyond refashioning. Over the coming days you will get a chance to meet each of us as refashionistas through a series of interview style posts.

Thank you and please enjoy the Refashion Co-op!

Eddie
